I don't think we ever met Severus Snape. We saw a series of masks he'd created to get through life, hiding his true self underneath them all until the "real" Snape vanished beneath a conflicting pile of masks and careful practised responses and rehearsed behaviours. I don't think we even saw him in the flashbacks, just the masks he wore as a child.

Severus Snape? We never knew him at all.

I thing this might be a joke or a quote or something I'm not recognizing? But I just wanted to say that I really don't agree with this point of view. Our true selves are the accumulation of everything we are and everything we do. What's beneath the surface is not necessarily more real than what's on the surface. Because it's all part of a whole.
