Snape was a screwed up dude who needed therapy like a fish needs water, but he did manage to do the right thing at the very end and if he hadn't, then Harry might not have won through.

Yes, they just don't change his good parts. Snape haters act like Harry was wrong to name his son after him.

I agree that he had his good parts. Just as long as you don't say that every single thing he ever did in the series was actually fine.

I'm still personally uncomfortable with the naming. I wouldn't say "wrong," but while I get that Harry forgave Snape for himself it feels a bit disrespectful to Neville and Hermione. That's just my personal opinion.

Well Hermione and Neville can name their kids what they like, and Harry will just have to man up and accept that. You can't go around only catering to your high school friend's opinions all your life.

I don't see how this is disrespectful to anybody else. A name is a name. And anyway, it's not like Harry called his son "Severus Snape," he called him "Albus Severus."

It was the middle name of the second son. He couldn't have treated Snape's less if he'd given it to his dog. The most worthless naming position on the, traditionally, least valued child. It is the most backhanded way of acknowledging someone in your life, and short only of an outright insult. Presumably Neville and Hermione understood that.

I mostly just think that 'Albus Severus Potter' sounds horrid, and doesn't roll off the tongue nicely. I think it's the fact Severus has 3 syllables, but Albus and Potter have 2, so Severus upsets the rhythm a bit.

I don't think many people disagree with this? It is just that for some people, the flaws outweigh the positives. He did do the right thing in the end. And he died out of love for Lily (a love that was a bit creepy and stalker-like, but still). But that doesn't change the fact that he was an adult who bullied children, and for me that flaw outweighs the positives.

JKR wasn't entirely defending him anyway. She was talking about both sides of him, and it was more about Harry's forgiveness than actually being about Snape.

I agree with this. Honestly, I just don't think doing one good thing suddenly makes someone a good person. If you act like a complete jerk every day, you're a jerk even if you die for a good cause or whatever.

Yeah, she was saying what she's said all along--Snape was a fucked up person who was capable of good *gasp* HE WAS COMPLICATED AND GREY OHHHH NOOOZZZZZZ She wasn't "defending" him, she was saying what she's said all along, and it goes along with exactly how she wrote him. This wasn't some new Word from God and the confession is silly.

He became a... well, "good guy" might be pushing it, but he became a non-Death Eater because of Lily's death. But that doesn't mean that Lily's death was the entire content of his being a non-Death Eater.

I don't think we ever met Severus Snape. We saw a series of masks he'd created to get through life, hiding his true self underneath them all until the "real" Snape vanished beneath a conflicting pile of masks and careful practised responses and rehearsed behaviours. I don't think we even saw him in the flashbacks, just the masks he wore as a child.

Severus Snape? We never knew him at all.

I thing this might be a joke or a quote or something I'm not recognizing? But I just wanted to say that I really don't agree with this point of view. Our true selves are the accumulation of everything we are and everything we do. What's beneath the surface is not necessarily more real than what's on the surface. Because it's all part of a whole.
