Joy and Sadness are personifications of emotion, not actually people, so they can't really bully each other.

It's like telling yourself you don't want to be sad.

Yeah, this. A bully, really? Come on. Joy is an [i]emotion[/i] and Sadness is [i]literally not a person[/i]. Joy is trying to minimize sadness because Riley is trying so hard to be happy. Is anyone who tries to swallow down sadness and grin through it a "bully"? I get they are still characters, but in the context of the show, Joy can't be seen as a bully, imo. It makes sense that Riley doesn't want to be sad, but happy.

You don't get reacting to fictional characters and that they can evoke feelings in the context of the story, do you.

you can totally tell yourself you shouldn't or don't deserve to be sad in a really unhealthy way, though

'bullying yourself' might not be the neatest description of it but the effects in terms of self-esteem and self-loathing are pretty similar tbh
