I was rather baffled at Mako and the fan reaction to it. It seemed to me that all she did was follow along with whatever the main white dude told her, and then was unconscious during the final heroic moment. She didn't really seem to have much to do.

But what really offended me was the godawful fake Australian accents. There are so many Australian actors, and I cannot fathom why they didn't hire actual Aussies. Or just not have them be Australian. UGH. Hmmm, apparently I had more feels about PR than I thought.

I've had some PR fans try to sell me on the idea that Mako was the main character, because we get more of her backstory than anyone else's. I was like... sure, but that still doesn't make her the central protagonist. The movie is very clearly from Raleigh's POV, he's the central figure. What's more, during the battles he yells instructions at Mako as if she's had no training whatsoever. WTF is that about if they're supposed to be equals?

It's nice the movie managed to mostly avoid the usual Asian stereotypes of Exotic Sex Kitten or Dragon Lady, but it's sad people want to award blue ribbons for that alone.

"Not the main character because not their POV" is faulty thinking, though. Having a story told by a character can still mean another one is the main character - it's a popular stylistic choice (see Sherlock Holmes, for example).

That's a good example, but it really doesn't apply to Pacific Rim where the focus is not just Raleigh's POV but Raleigh's story, Raleigh's feelings, Raleigh's development over the course of the film, Raleigh saving the day, etc. It's not a story about Mako Mori as told by Raleigh.
