don't forget, the mako/haru side started calling rin/haru abusive halfway through the first season and regularly posted shit in the #rinharu tag...

Seriously, RIn/Haru fans were never as bad to Makoto. At worst, they thought he was boring. Mako/Haru fans were constantly calling Rin a "horrible abuser."

Huh. I definitely remember a huge wank fest about Rinharu shippers saying Makoto was abusive and manipulative towards Haru because of those interview quotes about Haru always going along with what Makoto wants or something like that. Granted, that was season1-ish, but it definitely existed.
Seriously, both this fandoms are pretty equal when it comes to awfulness.

I think you could be confused with co-dependent? Either way, Rin and abuse comes up a lot more often than that, an opinion peddled by some BNFs and that's partly why RinHaru people are aggravated and defensive on a regular basis.

Anyway, trying to get the last word is a bad habit and I should stop. Both sides are bad and listing off faults will just lead people to one-up each other and that can go on all day. Though I hope that OP can see why some Rinharu fans might look more angry most of the time.

But honestly, isn't SouRin a fairly big ship? How come they never seem to come up when Rin hate comes up? I was into that for a while but maybe I didn't look around enough.

From ~hearsay~ on the anon meme, I actually learned that some SouRin bnfs are Sousuke stans who don't even like Rin that much, so maybe they're fine with the hate. I think SR is way more popular in Japan than in the West anyway.

That's what I heard too, people don't like Rin in general. I think they just don't understand him, tbh.
It's similar with MakoHaru, actually.
A lot of the MH shippers don't like Haru, at all.
They only ship Makoto with Haru because, I guess, it's easy? And Makoto seems to be so taken with Haru, so they go with it.

According to tumblr, literally every character in Free! is abusive.

Haru doesn't communicate well? He's abusive.
Makoto is a bit smothering? Abusive.
Nagisa is enthusiastic? Abusive and manipulative.
Rin does rival things like the rival of a sports anime is meant to? Abusive.
Rei... actually I haven't seen him called abusive, proof that Rei is the best
Nitori idolizes Rin? He's a STALKER and UNHINGED and ABUSIVE
Momotaro captured a bug? Abusive to animals

He was a lot better in Season 2, but in Season 1 he... was borderline abusive at times, especially when he was physically assaulting Haru.

OhmyFUCKINGgod we've been OVER THIS so many times. AND BY THE WAY, I'M A MAKOHARU SHIPPER, just so we get this out of the way and I don't get wanked on for being a RinHaru defending their ship.

Here's a straight up DICTIONARY, and fucking "getting out of an abusive situation" help website definition (caps by me for emphasis), of what ABUSE means, you goddamn ignorant turd:

"For behavior between two people to be abusive, these THREE THINGS MUST BE CLEARLY TRUE:
1) one person needs to have power over the other - i.e. something that the other person DEPENDS ON for life, safety or survival, like food, a job, medication, shelter, transportation, etc.
2) the perpetrator needs to gratify a need by intentionally using the victim in a way that significantly harms the victim psychologically, physically, or spiritually beyond debate
3) the victim cannot effectively defend themselves (assert effective boundaries) from the perpetrator, or withdraw.
These three criteria apply to physical, verbal, sexual, and spiritual abuse."

SO let's recap!

1) Does Rin have power over Haru's physical well-being in terms of life support? >> NO!!!

2) Does Rin intentionally damage Haru? >> Jerks shouting that Rin is abusive will argue that yes, he does, but NO! HE DOES NOT! Every time he displays his anger and frustration, it's born on the spot, and is an emotional reaction he can't control. He does not INTENTIONALLY SET OUT TO USE HARU TO GRATIFY HIS NEEDS. That's the difference: it's not what he does, it's in the INTENT of the action. He doesn't plot or make elaborate plans on how to fuck Haru up just so he does what Rin wants! And this will now tie in to the third one, because I know I'll hear the "but Rin told Haru to swim for him!" - yeah, he did, because he thought he needed to beat Haru in order to get over his issues, but here's the thing --->

3) Does Haru not have the opportunity to defend himself, withdraw, or deny Rin? >> Fuuuck no, or rather, YES, HE DOES HAVE THE OPPORTUNITIES, AND HE USES THEM!!! When Rin tells him to swim for him, Haru retaliates almost immediately and sets his own terms and conditions (the "don't cry if you lose"), as well as removing himself from the intense situation by moving Rin's hand away. This is not the behavior of a person who is suffering from abuse! Also, an abuser who has just been confronted wouldn't just walk away, they'd attempt to retake control of the situation - which Rin does not do!

TL,DR RIN IS NOT ABUSIVE!!!
STOP CONFLATING AGGRESSION BORN OUT OF FRUSTRATION, DEPRESSION AND PAIN WITH ABUSE!!!

I appreciate your passion and defense of Rin, who is my favorite character by quite a wide margin, but I also think ayrt is either a troll or someone so willfully intent on misunderstanding the story that there's hardly any point in arguing with them.

he's not bullying either... all these things imply actual agenda/purpose behind the aggressor's behavior.

there's no power imbalance between haru and rin at all and it might even be skewed towards haru, because of rin's emotional state and how it hinges on his perception of friendship and self worth (or lack thereof) at the time.

while name calling isn't cool, i do think calling rin abusive is one of those ways fandom uses very serious terms way too lightly.

Borderline abusive, as in he does things like targeting, belittling, harassing, and being violent to a person. Not "he has Haru in a basement and doesn't feed him" abusive.

... have you actually watched the show ?
