Re: OP

I agree with this statement. I've been in this fandom since the original preview trailer, and I am very much not a BNF (barely 100 tumblr followers or so). I'm a self-proclaimed multishipper, with almost equal preference for basically all the ships, even the more obscure ones... (What can I say, this show is extremely shippable!) BUT I consider MakoHaru to be my OTP for Free! in general since the very start. I just like the "childhood friends turned lovers" trope. I try to stay comfortably away from all the heat going down in the fandom as much as possible. I prefer a "ship and let ship" attitude and try to surround myself with fellow multishippers as much as possible. I just reblog stuff and have fun reading fics....

But, even I can't help but notice the massive explosions that have been happening from time to time. And it's been especially prevalent most recently, surround first the previews, and now the release of the new Starting Days movie.

Recently there have been several fandom events surrounding a couple of the main ships, MakoHaru, RinHaru, and SouHaru. There have been huge scheduling conflicts over these events, despite - from what I've seen - RinHarus having the first announcements. It seemed like they were being deliberately encroached on, even though the overlap of fans between these ships is not that big and it probably didn't bother many people - it was still pretty rude imo.

And then there was the issue with that one event in the RinHaru fandom, I think it was called Feel My Heart, or something? Like the soundtrack track? And it might not be over yet, IIRC? It was like a "hey let's put together a scrapbook and get some postcards to the creators of the show" drive, and from what I saw they were trying to make it as non-shippy as possible? Just cute things to say "thanks" to the staff, and focusing on the characters and their shared story, the gist I got from it anyway. But shortly after that I saw there was an event in the MakoHaru fandom, which did a similar thing, but for Makoto's birthday? I can't help but question the timing of that event, since it was announced like two weeks after the RinHarus officially started their campaign. Anyway, they put together a box of fanart and messages for Makoto - as in the character, not the people behind it - and sent it in, after having a GoFundMe campaign that demanded something like 200$ to even ship the package??? What the hell costs that much...? And even as an avid MakoHaru shipper myself, I have to say - IT WAS EMBARRASSING and I could NOT bring myself to participate in any shape or form... When a fandom claims it's "for Makoto's birthday", and then decorates the package to the creators of the show with MakoHaru imagery, and includes messages from fans along the lines of, and this is an almost direct quote: "Makoto can come to Canada with Haru and get married! It's legal here!"... I simply have to wonder about the motives and the point of the event, not to mention question the sanity of those people, because I don't think they understand how extremely uncomfortable something like that must sound in Japan... "Mortifying" and "embarrassing" don't begin to cover it. Oh and I don't even want to get into the way they packed that whole box, and made a whole freaking stack of literal confetti trash with those messages. It's like they were aiming to inconvenience the Free! staff as much as possible?... Why?...
But, I got derailed from my original thought, sorry.
What happened next was the RinHarus put up a map where the fans could add their locations. Few days later? MakoHarus do the exact same thing, but ask people to send in messages instead. ...Coincidence? I can't help but doubt it :/

And now the whole Starting Days movie thing...
Now, I really love MakoHaru, their bond is amazing and I'm happy that they're getting a lot of new material... but the things the MH shippers been doing in the RinHaru tags, and on twitter recently? Are just shitty.
I've seen instances of people going after the twitter posters who were disappointed with the movie - not just because of the supposed "lack of RinHaru" - which let's face it, they must have known about and expected, because Rin is in Australia during the novel - but because the movie twisted and mutilated the original material. They were getting heckled and laughed at, total ridicule, because apparently being a RinHaru shipper means that you can't objectively see when a movie is a very bland and very UNfaithful adaptation to an interesting novel. (Which is exactly what it is - weak, bland, cookie-cutter "let's all be friends" plot, and any drama is resolved in 1 minute of screentime.)
And the stuff in the RH tags on tumblr is starting to get a bit awful too. MH shippers coming in and asking things like "So how does it feel to ship a shitty ship, while OUR ship has been happily sailing along for months now?" - leaving aside the fact that this supposed ship involves TWELVE YEAR OLD BOYS. ...And I don't want to get into the whole twitter explosion of "bby!Makoto is such a SINnamon bun" and "Naughtily sinning at 12 already!!"... It's gross and absolutely uncalled for, and I've been actively recoiling from even mentioning anything about MH on my own twitter, because I don't want to be associated with... that.
Sorry, I got completely off track. Just got a lot on my chest...

TL;DR I do think my main fandom, MakoHaru, are the instigators for a lot of the wars, and I seriously can't blame the avid RinHaru shippers for trying to defend themselves :/ I would too, if someone came into my yard and shit on my lawn, just to upset me. Which is exactly what they're doing...
