The entire show was about friends and fandom deluded itself that it was actually about a love triangle.

True. I only ever viewed Free! as a cheesy after-school special on friendship.

I can understand how shippers can interpret that stuff, but at the end of the day we won't see any couples actually happening. Kyoani knows the big portion of the audience is fujos so they try to bait them with fanservice, and it works.

What's even more tragic is there are people who actually think any ship in Free! is representation for homosexuality despite it just being fanservice with ship teases.

I've lost count how many times I've how many ships are supposed to be canon by now.

I don't think it's completely fair to blame the fans when they're doing exactly what the creators want them to do. If you think the show was really just about friends and not aimed at fujoshi and written with deliberate shipteasing in mind, you're the one deluding yourself.
