I'm not sure why I read all that when I don't even know the fandom, but in the spirit of inquiry, I'm going to ask if you are sure your side hasn't also engaged in any wanky behaviors. Especially since it is, by your own admission, the larger and more supported faction in the fandom. I don't know this fandom but I have known shipwars... Kataang and H/G fans didn't conduct themselves very well either (smug on canon?) even if the Harmonians and Zutarians had the worst reputation. A war is never one-sided, after all.

On a side note, I'm amused that one of the pairings apparently involves a Rin and a Haru. Reminds me of the Fruits Basket couple. They were so great.

As someone who prefers Rin/Haru, I never experienced this. I think I was just never that "deep" in the fandom. I did notice some Mako/Haru shippers bashing Rin and talking about how he was "abusive," but I feel like this died down.

In any case, I feel like this secret could have been shortened to like 3 sentences...lol.

I'm not involved in the actual fandom but I loved their relationship in the series. I didn't even realize there was going to be a film, but I'm pleased to hear it! (Thanks for mentioning it!)

As for shipping...IDK what to tell you. Some people are really obsessed with their ships, and while I understand the enthusiasm and dedication, I don't understand ship wars. (Too much time wasted on unpleasantness and hate, when you could be enjoying yourself and leaving people to do their own thing.)

I prefer Mako/Haru. I just liked their vibe. I'm just not too crazy about Rin and his personality.

Anyway, this is why I like to quietly fan over things in my own little corner. I watched the show. I poke Japanese doujinshi and I've come across some fanart/fic on tumblr, but I don't really seek it out because fans are scary.

I've never understood shipping wars. For me, I just sit on my own corner with my own ships/headcanons and believe in the philosophy that everyone's allowed to ship as he/she pleases.

As far as "Free!" goes, I love SouMako, MakoHaru and ReiGisa. I'm not involved in the fandom (I pretty much do this with other series, be it animated or live action), but I enjoy the series and the character dynamics for what it is.

I pretty much exclusively shipped NagiRei and stayed out of the Makoto/Haru/Rin/Souske pairing drama, but nobody is innocent on either side. Right now MakoHaru are acting like smug bullies because of the movie. Previously it was RinHaru acting like smug bullies because of the mook. Just accept both sides have shitty people and get over it. Like what you like and stop viewing it as winning because in the end it's just FANSERVICE none of them are actually going to get together in a homosexual relationship and you know it.

I'll just have to echo the whole "MakoHarus are just as guilty" sentiment. I try to stay in my lane but I can't search at all for RinHaru on anything like Tumblr or Twitter without seeing MakoHarus complain about it or make judgment calls about people who ship RinHaru so I don't even bother looking anymore. One quick example is how searching for Free's director Utsumi will lead to a lot of people with a MakoHaru slant insulting her for her favorite being Rin and supposedly liking RinHaru. Or RinHaru being the only duet CD preview with locked comments on youtube. Things like that make me pretty sure that RinHarus are seeing a lot more MakoHarus being aggressive in our space than the other way around. I wouldn't say that it's just because they're more aggressive by nature, just because there's just more of them in total and therefore there's more shitty people in bigger fandoms.

Whatever it is, I'm extremely tired and jaded from Free fandom. Especially when the abuse wank comes up because of some shit-stirrer. And it becomes a cycle of "this group did this nasty thing so I'll complain about them in their space because they're all nasty and awful and my own shit doesn't stink". I'm so, so sick of it and all the finger-pointing.

Literally nothing else matters to me as long as Rin gets his Olympics dream. Any pairing can become canon or get merch or whatever, idgaf. It's amazing that I started watching this fujobait show hoping to find a ship and ended up getting ridiculously attached to this dumb kid that a sizable portion of the fandom loathed and called "abusive". When the show ended and he left for Australia again, I remember people getting pissed (???) but I was just like, "Hell yeah, get it, son! Chase yo dreams~"

I hope he gets some therapy and lots of new friends and gold medals, and that when he wins he hugs his mom and sister and cries beautiful tears, and at the end he stands in front of his dad's grave in the rain and sobs, "We did it, Dad. We did it." Not that I've thought about it much, or anything.

But nah, as a multishipper with no huge preferences, while both the MakoHaru fans and RinHaru fans were pretty fucking awful at times, I have to say that overall RinHaru's taken the shit trophy by a mile. Maybe it's just because it's been for a longer time and more constant? Like...they won't let up. So it's aggravating.
