I'm a MakoHaru shipper myself, but a casual one. says Rei

I'm not involved in the actual fandom but I loved their relationship in the series. I didn't even realize there was going to be a film, but I'm pleased to hear it! (Thanks for mentioning it!)

As for shipping...IDK what to tell you. Some people are really obsessed with their ships, and while I understand the enthusiasm and dedication, I don't understand ship wars. (Too much time wasted on unpleasantness and hate, when you could be enjoying yourself and leaving people to do their own thing.)

Haha, Rei is good for icons, I kept noticing that as I watched the series. I'm an amateur icon-maker and I was just like "the expressions!"

As for Mako/Haru, yeah the second season really sold what had been a slow upswell for me, and I ended up "hardcore" only in the sense that I ended up shipping them quite a bit, but...I guess what really made me make this secret is that the show itself is so relaxed and lowkey, and I thought "changing sides" would have been easy and pain-free because hell, the show itself is so...free of drama. Like no matter who ended up with who (besides the obvious Rei/Nagisa not!canon-but-still-kinda) I can't picture any of these characters having a bad thing to say to one another. Even at their most emotionally charged, it's obvious any rift between them comes from misunderstandings and hurt feelings, not true malice.

And yet, this fandom...Jesus I was having Naruto World World War flashbacks! Like...I guess this was just the last fandom I would expect that from. I'm in the Haikyuu!! fandom now and it's like there are definitely fandom juggernauts pairing wise, but nobody is at each other's throats in the least. I can't figure out what the difference is. :/

I think the difference might be more defined lines between the big ships? As in, no true rival ship?
I'm the anon above who can't get into ReiGisa, but look at them. No one there who could 'take away' one character from the other via another important relationship to them and tadaaaa. Mostly drama-free sailing!
I don't watch Haikyuu!! (watched the first season, sadly bored me mostly to tears... I was so looking forward to a new volleyball anime), but they're for the most part neatly paired up with their BFFs/partner in the team. Sure, there are people who ship outside the juggernauts, but no two juggernauts are directly fighting.

The difference is obvious. S1 of Free! ended with Rin/Haru being big, and, once the creators realized that Makoharu was bigger, they ended up pushing Mako/Haru in S2. Haikyuu!! never had that. Kagehina is solid because it's not like Hinata, the protagonist, has another guy whose relationship is developed like his and Kageyama's.

Also, the whole premise of Free! is fujoshi pandering while Haikyuu never was. It's about the competition and becoming better players through understanding teammates. Free! is super touchy feely and comes off more like a homoerotic drama than a legit sports anime. Kageyama and Hinata aren't going to start crying and hugging under cherry blossom trees. Therefore, the fandom doesn't really have scenes or official art to point how totally ~~gay and canon~~ their ships are like the Free! fandom does.

The difference with Haikyuu!! is that the characters are more complex (not necessarily more interesting or more winning; I really love several of the Free! characters) and the story itself has absolutely no ship teasing whatsoever. And even though merch does tend to pair up the characters along popular shipping lines, it's always very clearly friendship-themed and not secretly suggesting romantic relationships... so if you ship a less common pairing you're not going to feel like the creators hate you, NOR are you gonna get all smug if you happen to ship the pairings that end up in merch because the merch isn't "confirming" anything.

I honestly blame KyoAni for a lot of the shipping wars. They knew that Free! had a very lightweight premise and that the story they were telling was a kind of weird combo slice-of-life/dramafest/fanservice deal which is what they usually do, because KyoAni is less about telling great stories than they are about superbly beautiful animation and also making tons of ¥¥¥¥¥¥. By introducing the kind of fanservice that feels more like queerbaiting and then by making merchandising and storytelling decisions based on ideas of pleasing the fans rather than following some kind of interesting artistic vision.... well, KyoAni is happy with what they do and I think that stirring up shipper ire is a way to help keep people fanatically invested when the actual story itself is not all that compelling.

Really, I think Free! fandom could be 1000% improved if shippers stopped snipping at each other and instead just recognized how KyoAni is to blame for pretty much everything. :)

Free! would be a fun series to make icons for no matter what characters you use!

Even at their most emotionally charged, it's obvious any rift between them comes from misunderstandings and hurt feelings, not true malice.\

That's very true, but fandom is often quite different then the source material. The attitudes aren't even remotely the same in most cases. In this case that's a bad thing.

I can't figure out what the difference is. :/

It's already been said, but I think the main difference is that Haikyuu!! doesn't ship-tease in the same way Free! does. When media ship-teases multiple couples fandom always finds some need to assert their ship as being more likely.
