If you want to see everything good and bad about creative independence in a single webcomic, I recommend Indefensible Positions. It's got a magical mosquito, dueling avatars of Ulysses S. Grant and Robert E. Lee, a masked superhero who calls himself The Zoophiliac, and Mickey Mouse throttling someone. http://indepos.comicgenesis.com

Do you like horrible monsters, blood/gore, Scandinavia, and kitties? Stand Still Stay Silent may be the webcomic for you. The art is fabulous, it updates five days a week, and so far, there's no romance other than the occasional mention of married couples who aren't the main characters (this is a huge plus for me personally but may be a deal breaker for others).
