If you want to cosplay, you should at least try to make yourself look as accurate to the character as possible. And if you choose to do it in public, like at a con, you're opening yourself up to criticism, so don't complain if people do criticize parts of your costume.

Kinda elitist, I guess, but that's what I think.

So do you favour black face or do you think people shuld stick to their own race?

lol

On the off chance that you're not a troll, here's a serious answer:

Neither. I don't support blackface because of the racist history, but I also think that there's nothing wrong with stuff like tanning if you want to cosplay a character with darker skin.

Hmm, yeah, that's pretty elitist.

I definitely don't think people should be randomly cut slack in, say, a costume contest. But cosplaying because you want to is like wearing the clothes you want to wear and while yeah you're free to say whatever you want, criticizing someone's not-professionally-done cosplay that they are clearly just wearing for fun because you feel entitled to only looking at pretty/fancy/super accurate cosplays in public places is assholish. Let people have their fun.

I wouldn't really consider that cosplay though. For me, cosplay is about trying to represent the character as best as I can. I see it as something different from, say, just putting on the character's clothes for fun.

Yeah, but people on the con floor, that's literally what they're doing. They're putting on the character's clothes for fun.

Eh. Like I said, I draw a line between cosplaying and just having fun. Not that cosplay isn't fun in itself, but I consider it to be more than just putting on clothes.

Then when you see people in costume, how do you know who is cosplaying and who is just having fun wearing the costume of a character?

But your definition of cosplay is not universal, and imposing your own definition for the sake of argument is rather silly. If what you meant was "professional cosplay" then you should have said so.

But I don't mean professional cosplay. What I'm saying is that I think people should put effort into cosplaying, otherwise I don't think it counts as cosplay at all.

Not universal, yeah, that's why it's an opinion.

Do you feel that way about all hobbies?

I bake. Should I only put my efforts towards baking really challenging and impressive things? If I just want to make some cookies does that mean I'm note really baking?

so basically your opinion is that you want to re-define a commonly accepted word.

I guess I don't really have a response to that. I think it's pretty dumb, but I can't really argue with it...

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Okay but what do you count as effort? I'm on the poorer end. I can't afford to do a perfect representation, and instead I do what I can. I still look enough like the character that people recognize who I am, and that's, to me, what matters.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Not at all. Anytime you do anything in public you are implicitly opening yourself up to criticism from the other members of the public (and them from you too, of course). Moreso if you are doing it at a con with awards for best costume, or costuming advice panels.

Do you feel this way about people randomly criticizing others' clothing choices? That's acceptable just because they're out in public?

Not everybody cosplaying is going to cosplay-related panels or contests. Some people just do it because it's FUN, and some don't have (or want to spend) the time and money required to make it more than just a casual, maybe-not-super-accurate cosplay.

Kinda agree. Not going to touch the fat cosplay issue, but I think that people should somewhat cosplay to character type.

For example, I would never be able to pull off a Blade cosplay, even though Wesley Snipes is the shit and that is always a costume design I have liked.

ia

To me, though I'm not a cosplayer, I see cosplay as a form of art. Just like playing a song or painting a picture or writing a story. It's totally fine to do these things and share them with the public, but when you share with the public it should be with the expectation that you're opening yourself up to criticism.

Lots of people do different types of art knowing that they aren't great and they aren't looking to impress anyone, and when they get critiqued they shrug it off because they weren't trying to improve anyway. That's cool. But if you're a 300 lb hairy bear of a man and you cosplay as Sailor Moon and then get upset when people comment on your weight or sex or body hair or wahtever, that's not cool. It's not cool of people to be mean to you, but it's also not cool to expect praise for something done poorly.

So fat people should stick to... Which characters, again? I'm sorry, but most fat characters are gross and negative stereotypes.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
huh. I have a really fat (like, not curvy-chubby, more like totoro.) friend and she regularly takes home prizes from cosplay contests because she can pull off all kinds of characters that are never cosplayed because thin people look ridiculous in these outfits. like, ursula is totally awesome, but I would look like her thin, less awesome sister. dito for beloved mascots like Totoro.

if you cosplay anime characters do you have to get your eyeballs enlarged?
