Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
What opinions do you have that people judge you for?

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
So our church decided that instead of a normal service today they were going to have the Children's Christmas pageant. It was awful.

Anyway, I expressed the opinion to a friend who doesn't like kids any more than I do that such things should not be in the normal service because no one who isn't a parent should be forced to watch kids do things. If parents want to watch their kids perform, great. If non-parents want to watch kids perform, great. But it should be a separate thing from normal things that everyone attends.

And this person was horrified at this opinion. I don't get it. They don't even like kids. Why is this so awful?

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't stand churches nor children, and even I think you are the asshole in this. Churches have the integration of all members of the community from all age groups as one of their raison d'etres. Putting up with other people's children is one of the hazards of church life. Also you might want to consider Luke 6:37 and Luke 18:16 too.

Because it's entitled. Sometimes people have to sit through things that aren't their cup of tea; that's life. You don't deserve special treatment for this one thing.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's an activity meant to be inclusive for the community and the children are its youngest members. It's part of raising those kids right so they embrace the Christian spirit, which you are showing very little of with your poor attitude.

How long is the pageant and did it completely eliminate the normal service? I don't think there's anything wrong with the kids performing for the congregation, and in fact it might be really important to them, but I can see that it would be annoying if it took up literally the entire service.

(Though I find it hard to imagine that it would really take more than 20 minutes, tops, and likely less)

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It's church, sweetie, not a Broadway show. It's kind of about community and family.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
If it makes you feel better OP, I didn't find anything wrong with what you said. Then again, I've asked for advice on here before and people took the smallest negative detail from what I said and turned the blame on me (mostly anons, though, so it didn't bother me that much).

The church the rest of my family goes to has multiple masses for the holidays, so you can choose whether you'd like to attend the children's mass or the more formal christmas eve mass. It's kind of strange your church was just "oh by the way, we're having the kids pageant today" and didn't have any sort of notification beforehand. Stuff like that needs to be scheduled, you would think. If I had been in your shoes I would have been upset too.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't entirely disagree with you, but you're missing the point on what church is about. It's not meant to be Sunday entertainment, it's about the community as a whole where including people is more important than turning out a high quality production. That's why church choirs often don't kick out people who are clearly tone deaf, or why communion isn't limited to people who can get down the aisle quickly and efficiently without holding up the line.

Every church service is voluntary in terms of attendance, you know.

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2015-12-06 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
While my initial reaction matched the first few comments, I can't help but remember how my church when I was young had bulletins - leaflets that informed everyone of of events like special services, socials, Pathfinder meetings (church-run Scouts-like program) and such would have had advance notice of something like a children's pageant at least the week prior, because something like that would have been planned.

If your church does have such a leaflet, then either you need to read it better or whoever runs it failed at giving advance notice, or that pageant failed to give advance notice for them to put in the leaflet. If it's either of the latter two, then I think you have grounds to complain about the failure.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Looks like most of the other comments here are negative, OP, but I agree with you. However, I'm presuming they gave advance notice that there'd be a children's service. I would just have skipped it and attended a different one.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
How long was this pageant? If it was under half an hour, then I don't exactly think you're opinion is awful, but it does seem a bit on the "bah humbug" side.

If the pageant was longer than that, I agree that it's a kind of annoying choice of event, especially if they just sprung it on attendees, rather than letting them know so they could choose whether or not to skip it.

Gosh some of the responses you're getting. O_o

Re: Opinions people judge you for

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2015-12-07 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you. You are there to worship and learn more about your religion, not sit through a stupid play. This is even worse if there was no warning, so you could have just skipped it if you didn't want to see it.

And those anons mentioning community? Sorry, but not everyone in a community agrees on the same things all the time.

People will judge you for any political opinion. But I'm still wildly amused at how hard I get judged for thinking it's appropriate to accurately tag critical posts on Tumblr.

It's such a petty and inane topic, and to see people reduced to spitting rage over it is utterly bizarre.

I would agree with you if I didn't know anything about how Tumblr works, but tagging hate/criticism actually messes with the way most people use tags in practice, so I do think it's a reasonable thing to complain about.

Having zero interest in Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and other Christian holidays. Like, I appreciate getting time off from work and whatnot, but the actual holidays themselves? No thanks, I'll pass.

For some reason people get really, really offended (or horrified on my behalf) when I say I don't celebrate them and don't feel any "void" in my life for never having celebrated them growing up. But why would my family celebrate them? They're not part of our culture. /shrug

If you want to cosplay, you should at least try to make yourself look as accurate to the character as possible. And if you choose to do it in public, like at a con, you're opening yourself up to criticism, so don't complain if people do criticize parts of your costume.

Kinda elitist, I guess, but that's what I think.

People tend not to take that opinion well because they don't realize there is such a thing as feeling something for another human being, while at the same time NOT condoning any of the horrible things they did.

I think writers who portray women, minority members, survivors of realistic trauma, etc. have a basic obligation not to descend into flat stereotyping and exploitation, regardless of their target audience. I have gotten so much hate from male-presenting writers over this.

The really funny part is that I've also been blasted for stereotyping, albeit in a very specific circumstance. (I wanted to create a character who internalized and identified with every stereotype people had about him, as a way of showing how messed up stereotypes can get.) I do think there's a place to address and discuss stereotypes. I just think it's not worth bringing in all that baggage unless you actually intend to say something with it.
