Thanksgiving isn't a Christian holiday.

Not saying you have to celebrate it, but it's not Christian.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes it is.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
You're going to need to cite your sources on that one.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The only people who celebrate it are North American Christians. Therefore, it is a Christian holiday.

Sounds like it is a United Statsian Holiday there, mate.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 08:30 am (UTC)(link)
ummm. we do have thanksgiving in Europe. Only about a month earlier, because it's traditionally held when the main harvest is done and we thank god (or in older times, any of the gods wherever you lived) for what they've given us.
The way it's celebrated is different, sure, but then have a look at how different american christmas is from the many european ways to celebrate christmas. you'd have to claim that's not a christian holiday, either. I mean, where did this bastardized version of St. Nicolas/Odin/Whatever even come from? what's with the reindeers? Stockings? Huh? When I was little we only had the "Christkind" which is supposed to be baby jesus but in practice is imagined as a form of st. Lucy, an angelic female creature with blond hair and a crown of stars.

lots of non-Xtians celebrate it too, including me.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

No, it definitely isn't. You can take a Christian approach to how you celebrate it, and many people do, but it isn't on the Christian holiday calendar and it does not celebrate a religious event.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so explain why it doesn't exist in non-Christian cultures.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Because the holiday as we know it was invented in the US and Canada, which happen to have Christian majorities. It may pop up elsewhere due to historical associations with those countries (i.e. colonialism) and modern cultural ties, but North American-style Thanksgiving is not really celebrated outside of North America, even in places that are mostly Christian. Like, you're not going to go to the Vatican and be served turkey and pumpkin pie.

Because it's an American federal holiday? Do you think July 4th (American Independence day) is a Christian holiday?

No, it isn't? It literally isn't celebrated in any other country except America, and America isn't the only nation that has Christians by far.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not true. It's celebrated in both the US and Canada, and IDK about the US, but here in Canada it IS a Christian holiday and the only people who celebrate it are Christians.

Canadian Thanksgiving =/= American Thanksgiving

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-07 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
but here in Canada it IS a Christian holiday and the only people who celebrate it are Christians.

What? I'm sitting here in Canada right now, I'm pretty sure I'm much older than you, and this is the first I've ever heard of Thanksgiving being a Christian holiday. (And I'm Catholic, so I presume that's considered nominally Christian by most people.)

I'd say the concept of Thanksgiving here is definitely borrowed from the Americans, but is more of a fall supper kind of thing. It is not a big deal. It's a day off work, with a turkey dinner. There aren't any religious aspects to it, unless you count "being mindful or thankful for the good things in your life" a religious thing.

But why let any of that get in the way of the peculiar argument you seem intent on making?

I am Canadian and VERY atheist. My entire family is atheist. Many of my friends are atheist. And we all love Thanksgiving.

You're trying so hard here, anon, but your argument just keeps getting thinner and thinner and more detached from reality.

Shit brb going to text all my Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, and atheist friends and tell them to stop celebrating Thanksgiving and spread the word to their families.

Re: Opinions people judge you for

(Anonymous) 2015-12-06 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't believe for a second that you actually have Muslim, Jewish, or Hindu friends.

Also, atheists don't count. Most of them are former Christians and are thus culturally Christian.

Also, I think more than half the replies were to that one Canadian anon, who I don't believe was a troll - just someone with a very particular experience and the unusual perspective to match.

It was amusing to say the least.

If that is the case, it's very special.
