I think writers who portray women, minority members, survivors of realistic trauma, etc. have a basic obligation not to descend into flat stereotyping and exploitation, regardless of their target audience. I have gotten so much hate from male-presenting writers over this.

The really funny part is that I've also been blasted for stereotyping, albeit in a very specific circumstance. (I wanted to create a character who internalized and identified with every stereotype people had about him, as a way of showing how messed up stereotypes can get.) I do think there's a place to address and discuss stereotypes. I just think it's not worth bringing in all that baggage unless you actually intend to say something with it.

Of gross stereotyping, or of being judged? I would prefer not to import drama to any specific site where I got in an argument.
