This just in: thin people dying of heart attacks is because of fatphobia!

According to one of these people anyway:

It's a long-ass post and there are some good, valid points made in it, but goddamn, I can't get over how fucking stupid that one statement is.

Not reading that link, but I am happy to hear this.

Sounds like a bunch of exceptions to the rule, but anyway you should always get a second opinion. I almost got my appendix removed when I was kid when I had regular colitis, and I was neither thin or fat.

That's not a great way to phrase it but it's true that the idea that fat=unhealthy and thin=healthy leads to a lot of thin people not getting the treatment they need.

Personally I'm more bothered by people phrasing it as their thin privilege backfiring when they have serious medical issues ignored. It's true that they've avoided the problem of people assuming they're unhealthy when they're not, but that doesn't mean that the opposite is a privilege when it's putting them in danger.

Sounds more like a form of ableism than anything, tbh.

That's what I always start thinking when this topic comes up.

It feels similar to "But you don't LOOK disabled!"

I'm thin and have had my cholesterol and blood sugar tested as part of a routine screening, despite my crappy insirance, and I've been offered the opportunity to have those things checked at other times. I have had my blood pressure checked every single time I've ever been to a doctor for any reason, and even a couple of times at the dentist. I think there's a lot of luck involved here regarding who your doctor is and what they consider worth following up on.

Anything that "backfires" on a regular basis really isn't part of a privelage. I think the problem lies in recognizing that privelage isn't black and white, all or nothing. It's possible to be very privelaged in most aspects of your life, but still have some things working against you in certain areas.
