Fantasy YA without a focus on het romance

[personal profile] coffeeyoukai 2015-12-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I am tired of every single fantasy YA book I find interesting having to include some kind of clichéd forbidden romance. Anyone have recs for something that is either purely gen, or has queer romance instead? Or just stuff where the romance is a background thing.

I'd like to see more of this too, but it's a hot trend at the moment and it's tough finding books that don't fall into this category. :(

the Power Of Five series by Anthony Horowitz is a pretty good gen YA modern fantasy, mind you I hardly read fantasy YA.

Ash by Malinda Lo! aka QUEER CINDERELLA

and then its prequel Huntress is its own story set in the same universe but not a retelling of anything. and it's still queer. :D
