The graphics of FFX were beautiful, I thought, and one of the only good things about the game. Well, and the music.

Besides that, I honestly agree. The game was kind of a mess. The voice acting was awkward (at least the two leads were) and it signals a new generation of Final Fantasies that are overly-complex, put graphics above quality, and generally lose the charm of the old games. Coincidentally I'm sure, this also happens to be when Square Enix takes over.

Oh and about costume designs, Tidus's was awful, so was Rikku's and Wakka's. Yuna's was cool, though I hated the character, and so was Auron's. But again, overly complex costumes are also a Square Enix thing, and there's something to be send about simple but effective designs.

I feel you may be right, but I wasn't really interested in that game for anything beyond graphics. Maybe if more effort had gone into the rest of the story it would have been more enjoyable?

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-12-07 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe, but I have a soft spot for FFX so *shrugs* Personally, the bad lipsynching was more of an issue than the voice acting itself.

OP

The #1 thing that pissed me off more than any other thing in the entire game was whenever the game decided to emphasize a line of dialogue by not letting me skip it until the character's mouth finished flapping open and closed. I'm used to being able to continue through dialogue in FF games the moment I'm done reading it, and instead I was sitting around waiting for it to accept my button presses (often multiple times, since the game doesn't let you restart failed fights and often gives you only one chance at side challenges.)

Oh god, that and not being able to skip cut scenes if you had to redo a boss fight really sucked. I don't know how many times I had to watch Rikku and Tidus freaking out about Seymour on Mount Gagazet (or that dumb, boring cut scene right before Sinspawn Gui. Fuck you, Sinspawn Gui. Fuck. You.)

At least FFX-2 lets you skip them, but A)the story sucked, B) you couldn't get 100% if you did that. Sigh.

I feel FFX owes a lot of it's success to being released early in the PS2 lifetime and making a good use of how new the system was, like FFVII did back in the psone. If they used an old engine it would probably not have much of a ground to stand on because the flashiness hid the flaws of the game(simple, linear, world consisting of corridors a la FFXIII) really well.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Not really, no.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
What I like most about the game is it's gameplay. It's my second favorite FF battle system, object interaction is smooth for the time, and the visuals still look good.

I like the world it created. I just wish the main character wasn't somehow even more obnoxious than Squall and that the romance didn't alternate between trite and repulsing. That and being able to skip dialogue.

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-12-08 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I love X's world so much, not so much because I want to live in it (Spira is a crappy place) because they put SO MUCH thought into the history of each place you visited. I could go on and on about how fond I am of the ruins, and how the game showed everything that Spira could have been but didn't become. Then again, this was one of the first games I've ever played on a home console, and I was young, so I was probably very star-struck by it.

Also, I love the battle system to bits too, it's hands-down one of my favorites.

As a kid I never found Tidus or Squall annoying, but as I grew up... damn they are annoying.
Thank god I have such a nostalgic fondness for the games that it doesn't ruin it for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I love my sprite games but there are also things I love about FFX as is.

And I actually think the voice acting in the english dub was decent for some of the characters, they just really needed a better Tidus and Yuna.

I think FFX was the last final fantasy game I legitimately enjoyed (I hear good things about 11 and 14 but I don't do the mmo thing) so I can't complain too much.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed on a better Yuna VA. Tidus I didn't mind so much, but then I assume he was supposed to be hormonal and wanky.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
SA True, Tidus you could at least laugh at because he's kind of supposed to be a dork. But I think I mention him because when I think about his scenes with Yuna I cringe.

But otherwise all the team members pretty much worked for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. FFX and FFIX were my favorite FF's. Everything that came after never lived up to the magic.

FFXII was boring politics and I found all the characters dull except Baltier and Fran.

FFXIII was really pretty but again found all the characters dull and the story was pretty dull. The world didn't feel like it had as much heart and fun as the other FF's.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, 9 was also incredible! All the characters were so full of life in that game.

I just haven't felt the stories in the recent games either, not many of the characters are even all that memorable. It's just kind of like "Oh here's pretty cg character 345 zzzzzzzz...."

[personal profile] dratinis 2015-12-08 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
*heavy breathing* DID SOMEONE MENTION FFIX???

IX doesn't get enough love.

I feel like ffx took a lot of risks and honestly, I respect that square did that and tried to do things differently. ffx was a helluva lot different from their other games and I remember being 14 and complaining about everything (TIDUS) but after I beat it, I kept going back to it and eventually realized it was one of my favorite games. I just love it.

but with that said, fuck blitzball. wakka's was the only weapon I never managed to get.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
The only thing I agree with is the 'no voice acting' part. Not because I found it bad in this game, but because I like that classic text only feel some games have. I love when there is an option in games to turn the voices off.

I actually loved FFX exactly the way it is because it was my first taste of Final Fantasy. My mom gave it to be for my birthday and my entire family watched me play the entire thing, and it was so much fun to experience it with them all.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! Playing FF with my bro and sis watching is, like, some of my fondest memories! :)

Nah. Then I wouldn't have Auron's pretty face to stare at.

I agree 100% with this, but I also never could stand to get very far in the game. I think for me it was in that awkward space where the graphics were good but nothing was quite good enough and so it came across as really awkward and idk? I think with sprite games, a lot of corny scenes can become a lot more ~epic in your head as you reimagine them to suit your tastes. The lack of voice acting especially would've helped in this case. And for me it's not like I hate all newer final fantasies bc ffxii was one of my favorites, but this game didn't work for me. So yeah basically I could've written this secret in my sleep!

I think one thing that would have helped a lot with the graphics would have been if they hadn't done so many closeups of people's faces. They clearly had a lot of trouble showing emotional reactions, and they wound up with a lot of Keanu Reeves Face.
