Someone who used to be a close friend went on long, work related rant and mentioned something about black people not being people. I nipped that in the bud pretty fast.

That person is pretty much the reason why I have a low-tolerance to people, tbh. I really don't care how great you are, if you voice an abhorrent opinion like that and you have zero willingness to see WHY it was wrong*, I won't hesitate to cut you out.

*said person mentioned that they didn't want a "lecture" concerning how what they said was an issue, so lol good-fucking-bye.

I wouldn't associate with them, but I would probably give them the sort of "lecture" you mention...I really need to learn that sometimes it's better to just walk away and not engage someone like that in those moments :p. 'Cause clearly people like that do not get it and very likely never will.

I'm not remotely surprised that there's sickos who think that, but to not even realize that might be controversial. O_o

Sometimes I wondered that, honestly. They used to be a pretty cool person when we first became friends, but they got more and more bitter and hateful with the passing of time. It's a sad state of affairs.

AYRT - Weird. The only thing I can think is maybe they got married to someone or otherwise started frequently associating with people who think like that? Or maybe they just figured you were "close" enough that they could show their more prejudiced side. :/

I think it was a combination of associating with people who think like that and being comfortable enough around me to show that ugly side of theirs. The area where we grew up was VERY WASP-y, so much so that I was probably the only other not-white friend that they have ever had. They have also voiced some pretty homophobic and ableist shit too. If anything, I'm the one who has to wonder if at some point a brick fell on my head while I was walking home!

There's a woman my mom works with who apparently sees nothing wrong with using the term "colored" to refer to black people.

From what my mom's told me about her, that's just a hint of how stupid she is in general.
