Someone once killed an acquaintanceship with me by unironically referring to someone I didn't even know as a "faggot". Man, unless you are an actual drag queen that is not something you haul out on first meetings.

I mean, he was right, but WTF?

(It was more like the last straw. He also made fun of my voice and asked if I was selling girl scouts cookies knowing full well I'm self-conscious about it. Among other things.)

A friend from school asked us to talk about our views on God on her facebook. I naively took the bait and talked about how I don't think you have to go to church, how there's a little bit of truth in everything. She sent me a PM basically offering to help save my soul.

That was about the end of our friendship.

There's a post that circulates Tumblr that says Americans are stupid for being sad about 9/11, because Hiroshima. I didn't think anyone I followed would be the kind of person to reblog it, but one of the people I actually talked to and considered a friend did. I unfollowed and have never spoken since.

Someone who used to be a close friend went on long, work related rant and mentioned something about black people not being people. I nipped that in the bud pretty fast.

A college friend, around the time when things got particularly bad and Israel and Palestine were in the news every day, started posting massively pro-Israel things saying basically support Israel no matter what and at a few points actually saying the Palestinians deserved to die. Unfollowed for that.

Someone I trusted complimented our mutual friends: A is the best person I've met in my life! B is so funny! so I asked them, what about me? The answer amounted to, to them I was a sad frail little thing that had to be protected. Fuck them to hell and back, I don't base my friensdhips on pity alone so I don't want theirs.

Someone I really admired that I used to be close to, and slowly drifted away from (but stayed as mutuals on tumblr) got terribly butthurt over this year's e3. They said anyone who thought nintendo put out a good show is a "nintendrone." This statement was directed at a general audience, but considering I had been excited over it and had publicly posted my opinion of how fun I thought it was, it stung.

To hear this coming from someone who I used to play pokemon, smash, and animal crossing with, that was the final confirmation they weren't the same person they used to be.

A girl who used to be my best friend posted this horrible rant about how all religions that believed in one God were the root cause of everything wrong in the world and everything would be so much better if we could nuke all the people who believe in God. She knows I'm very involved in my church and how important my faith is to me. I don't rub it in anyone's face and I believe in loving my fellow human beings and turning the other cheek, but I couldn't help asking her, "Do you think I should be nuked too?", and she made this flippant remark about how I wasn't that religious and she'd vouch for me if I pretended not to believe in God.

Someone I was sorta involved with wanted to and even tried to break up his Best Friend's relationship because he hated the girl. They couple was completely happy with each other. So I completely cut myself off from him.

Some one else I had been involved with, sorta, basically slept with me, then moved on to another girl in the same damn weekend and then tried to smooze up to me afterwards. I never talked to them again.

These probably don't count, but basically? You hurt me or someone I care about? You get dropped like a hot potato and then punted like a fucking football.

M is a family relative. My mother let her stay with us after she broke her leg and lost her job, and at that time, we got along really well despite our age difference. I'm not sure if I'd call her a friend, but she was definitely someone I liked and respected.

I recently learned that many years prior, M had given up her daughter C to my mother, feeling that she was unable to raise C as a single parent. C was furious from the start, wanting her "real" mother and lashing out at my mother. A few years went by with no cease in hostilities, and M found herself in a better place and asked for C back. My mother surrendered her without question.

To explain away her absence, M told C that she'd wanted her all along, but my mother had taken her and refused to give her back until then. There were plenty of holes in this story, but C desperately wanted to believe she hadn't been abandoned, and after hearing it, C hated my mother even more.

Ironically, my mother has long since forgiven M--if she hadn't, she wouldn't have allowed her to stay in her home. But after hearing that story, I didn't feel like I could act the same way around M if I saw her again.

I don't think I've ever dropped someone based on a political belief, partly because that's not really how I roll with differing beliefs*, and partly because I like to argue. But I have dropped a couple of people based on their sudden and unexpected bad treatment of me. One guy basically was trying to get me to sleep with him after I emphasized that I was not interested and he was to stop asking me about it, so I blocked him. There was a girl I was starting a friendship with and she called me a pet name out of the blue and with no permission, and when I got upset, she got really defensive and started saying that she didn't really want to be friends with someone so rude. I found I had no regrets about not being friends with her either; that shit creeps me out.

*not trying to shame people who choose not to associate with someone based on a belief, it's just not my preferred approach to things for various reasons

It's not...awful, but I was sort of friends with someone who's bordering on violently pro-life (she uses words like "murder" to describe it).

She has high functioning autism and also has specific beef with people who would abort disabled fetuses.

It's not like we instantly fell apart, but we sort of got estranged.

Someone who joked often about wanting to make a cult out of our skype chat tried to enforce draconian rules in it that included never expressing disagreement with anyone.

So obviously I got the fuck out of there.

One time I was trying to make friends with my dorm neighbors in college and so we were watching tv together. Miss Piggy and Kermit came onscreen and one of the girls goes "I hate that sesame street crap!!" and I knew we were not meant to be.

A girl from my high school once said that she didn't like or approve of trans people because they were unhappy with what God had given them, and this was right around the time when I was having gender problems so I dropped her like a warm potato.

I'm sure I've done it, probably at the start of a budding friendship but they don't stick with me cause not friends yet, just someone to dismiss.

But with established friends

1. Dude, who makes the odd sexist joke, on the phone to a call entire right out of the gate before person on other end can go through issue: "now listen here, woman"
(It was the tone. Ashamed to admit I only backed off instead of cut off. Would have saved so much drama if I cut off"

2. A taken male friend who knows I'm gay to me after I had gently turned him down "she's alright with it, she doesn't need to know" or some such.
I dropped him like a hot rock, took a taxi home and cut off all social media connections.

A girl once told me that, had she lived closer, she would've stopped being friends with me because the stress of my emotionally and verbally abusive, alcoholic father would've driven her away; she then tried to imply that the physical abuse she faced was more sympathetic than what I faced.

She was cruel in other selfish, demeaning ways but that comment took the cake in malicious comments.
