Assuming we're talking about the United States, you could get some good mileage about which side they fought for and who they served under in the Civil War. Especially if one of them is acting tough but never saw any action, or is lying about having ridden with Watie or Quantrill or Forrest to sound like more of a badass. It's been a while since I read True Grit, but I think some baiting goes on between Rooster and LaBoeuf on this subject.

As for a ghost: maybe someone who was pursued into the desert and killed by vigilantes, like the Bender family?

You could easily model a victim (or victims) of vigilantes after them, and who better to walk after they were killed?
