Idea Help

(Anonymous) 2015-12-08 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
For an Old Wild West fic with gunslingers, what ghosts from the past could come back to haunt someone without that ghost being a specific person (they're kind of out in the middle of nowhere so no one new can show up)?

Or are there any interesting topics of discussion gunslingers can talk about while riding around? Any other ideas you've got for gunslingers that's not action-oriented?

Middle of nowhere makes me think of a place that was destroyed--either a settler town, or a place where a native tribe lived.

It's actually just traveling in the desert until they get to a tiny town. I just need to find something for them to talk about/do during this time.

Maybe they pass by a rattlesnake, and it brings to mind memories of seeing or getting a rattlesnake bite. You could probably pass that off as a metaphor for something.

Assuming we're talking about the United States, you could get some good mileage about which side they fought for and who they served under in the Civil War. Especially if one of them is acting tough but never saw any action, or is lying about having ridden with Watie or Quantrill or Forrest to sound like more of a badass. It's been a while since I read True Grit, but I think some baiting goes on between Rooster and LaBoeuf on this subject.

As for a ghost: maybe someone who was pursued into the desert and killed by vigilantes, like the Bender family?

Just for gory fun: the Bloody Benders

You could easily model a victim (or victims) of vigilantes after them, and who better to walk after they were killed?

Do you mean literal ghost or metaphorical ghost? Because in the 'wild west', they could have all kinds of metaphorical stuff, from things they were forced to do to survive on a long trail or something, to family members who died of fever or cholera or something.

If you mean real ghosts, well - if they're on any kind of trail where others have been, you could have sad pioneer ghosts, or American Indian ghosts.

And they could talk about the state of their horses, what they're gonna do when they get to whatever town they're headed for (drink? gamble? get a bath? sleep?), where they grew up, how they learned to shoot/why they're a gunslinger/jobs they had, their families...i mean, pretty much anything.

Not to mention the Only Right Way to cook ham hocks and greens (or black-eyed peas), the weather in that really bad winter and how much worse it was where they were than where the other man was, whether it's true that some people have survived being bitten by a rabid dog (not true before Pasteur's PEP, but some people believed otherwise), the women who Done Them Wrong...

Heeee! Yes indeed. And even recounting stories they read in the last newspaper they saw (could have been months ago) or potboiler they read, or that time they Really Actually Met Buffalo Bill/Jesse James/Geronimo/Calamity Jane.....

Civil War is an obvious but logical choice. There's plenty to haunt a person who lived through it, especially if they saw action. You wouldn't even have to focus on a specific person, just the overall horrors of war, prison camps, the harsh conditions, what it did to families and friends... If you can find Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War, I highly recommend it. Long, but worth every minute.
