Civil War is an obvious but logical choice. There's plenty to haunt a person who lived through it, especially if they saw action. You wouldn't even have to focus on a specific person, just the overall horrors of war, prison camps, the harsh conditions, what it did to families and friends... If you can find Ken Burns' documentary on the Civil War, I highly recommend it. Long, but worth every minute.
