Do you mean literal ghost or metaphorical ghost? Because in the 'wild west', they could have all kinds of metaphorical stuff, from things they were forced to do to survive on a long trail or something, to family members who died of fever or cholera or something.

If you mean real ghosts, well - if they're on any kind of trail where others have been, you could have sad pioneer ghosts, or American Indian ghosts.

And they could talk about the state of their horses, what they're gonna do when they get to whatever town they're headed for (drink? gamble? get a bath? sleep?), where they grew up, how they learned to shoot/why they're a gunslinger/jobs they had, their families...i mean, pretty much anything.

Not to mention the Only Right Way to cook ham hocks and greens (or black-eyed peas), the weather in that really bad winter and how much worse it was where they were than where the other man was, whether it's true that some people have survived being bitten by a rabid dog (not true before Pasteur's PEP, but some people believed otherwise), the women who Done Them Wrong...

Heeee! Yes indeed. And even recounting stories they read in the last newspaper they saw (could have been months ago) or potboiler they read, or that time they Really Actually Met Buffalo Bill/Jesse James/Geronimo/Calamity Jane.....
