Harry was eleven at the moment, so I don't see how it's creepy? It took around six years to happen, big deal. She dated other people in the meantime, she wasn't stalking him obsessively.

Er. Yes they did? In CoS and OotP they do :/

Right. Because his best friends, his FIRST friends, the ones that have ALWAYS been there for him and everything should count the same as his new gf? I thought it was perfect that those he wanted to be with the most were them. If he'd chosen the three? People'd be bitching about how zomg Ginny is now a part of the trio and it's just WRONG.

Well that's fine. Don't like it. *I* do.

I'm not a Harry/Ginny fan in the slightest, but I agree with you wholeheartedly on the part about Harry choosing Ron and Hermione. He may have loved Ginny at that point, but Ron and Hermione were the ones who always stood by him through thick-and-thin for six years and were the first people he truly became friends with while Ginny only was able to really support and assist Harry sine about what? Mid-book five? It makes perfect sense for Harry to choose them and only them. And I don't see at all how that's even an arguement against Harry/Ginny or lessens the pairing at all.

I don't agree with a lot of the things Rowling did and the way she handled the last two books but that, if nothing else, is the one thing that I think she handled perfecltly; that the trio was always number one.

Very much agreed :3

I actually agree about Harry, Ron, and Hermione - I think their friendship was handled perfectly. I also love all the books, and while I dislike certain details in them (nothing is perfect), I think they're all very good.

I just think that Ginny is excluded too often for one to really care or believe in the pairing. I would have preferred the books without the tacked-on "true love".

No, you think that Ginny is excluded too often for YOU to really care or believe in the pairing.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 10:21 am (UTC)(link)
Er, I was just speaking in general? I really do think most people would have trouble believing it (which is why I said I think; maybe I should have used "I believe"?), not just that it was my personal opinion.

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Excluded in what way? Because while I do feel the lead-up to them becoming a couple was done terribly and Ginny should have gradually been eased more into the limelight, I fail to see how she her being excluded after their get-together makes a difference. It made perfect sense in the context of the story and, if anything, was meant to prove that Harry did care for her; he didn't want her to get hurt on his account. =/

(Anonymous) 2008-02-23 09:58 am (UTC)(link)
Or he didn't truly view her as an equal, since a) he made the decision for her, and b) he trusted his friends to fight and stay with him. If he'd thought of her as a true equal, he would have believed she was fighting for her own beliefs that Voldemort was wrong, not just on 'his account'.

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-02-25 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
The anon above said it perfectly.

Seconded. I love the books with all of my heart, and I was actually looking *forward* to being convinced to like that pairing by JKR, because I mean, who didn't know it was coming? I assumed she'd do it really well, since the woman is a storytelling goddess, but in the end I felt kind of cheated.

Then again, I found myself squeeing when Harry saved Draco. Hmm....

Well, she does really good subtext? XD

Re: 32

[identity profile] lanjelin.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
No, I don't mean that her crush on him when they were ten/eleven was creepy; it's the holding on to a crush she had as a ten year-old as she grows up that's creepy.

And I've never said she stalked him obsessively. Though I did find the part that she'd never given up on him while dating other people a bit much, really.

Er. Yes they did? In CoS and OotP they do :/

I meant an actual conversation, not a scolding (though where is the one in OotP? I think I've missed it). I especially would have liked one after Harry had become romantically interested in her. As things are, the impression one has is that he's only attracted to her looks.

Because his best friends, his FIRST friends, the ones that have ALWAYS been there for him and everything should count the same as his new gf?

Actually, I think your true love, which Ginny were supposed to be, should be your best friend, equal, and part of the most important happenings in your life. Especially in fiction, were things actually have to make sense (as opposed to real life where things generally just tend to happen at random, and would make awful stories).

Not to meantion that they all knew each other, and were supposed to be close; Ginny is Ron's sister, and I was frankly very surprised over the way she was left out.

I don't dislike the pairing because of the characters involved in it; I dislike the way it was written.

Re: 32

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Why? She's supposed to be his true love, but if she keeps liking him from the moment she meets him it's creepy? You can't have both.

Alright, maybe there isn't a deep conversation between them. There're lots of missing scenes, though. I'd rather have that, than have a chapter devoted to their relationship or something equally shippy and/or cheesy. She IS there for a lot of the stuff involving Voldemort.

He never included any of Ron's brothers before, either. I just like that he doesn't suddenly elevate Ginny to the same level of trust and attachment he has with Ron and Hermione. They've just been through way too much. It shouldn't mean that he doesn't love Ginny or anything. It just means they're different for him.

(Anonymous) 2008-02-23 09:55 am (UTC)(link)
There was a whole book where the Gryffindors did practically nothing beyond date, and yet still there were never any deep interactions between H/G. And what stuff with Voldemort was she there for - the stuff where Harry waits for her to leave the room before he discusses the HBP, or the stuff where he sternly tells her not to get involved and she agrees? Or the stuff where he leaves her to her mother after her brother is killed because he needs some peace?

Re: 32

I don't think I understand what you mean? I meant that a ten-year old might not have the most mature feelings, and holding on to them sounds more like an obsession than true love.

I also have trouble believing true love between people who hardly know each other.

There're lots of missing scenes, though. I'd rather have that, than have a chapter devoted to their relationship or something equally shippy and/or cheesy.

I just wanted something. Like, for example, the scene at the end of... OotP, I think, where Harry has a meaningful conversation with Luna, and with a few words we really get the impression that they understand each other. I don't ship them, but it had the feeling of a deep friendship developing, and something similar with Ginny would have been nice.

He never included any of Ron's brothers before, either. I just like that he doesn't suddenly elevate Ginny to the same level of trust and attachment he has with Ron and Hermione.

I just would have thought she'd be included among his most important people... After all, it's what Rowling wanted us to think, wasn't it?

It just means they're different for him.

I think I'm very much a romantic, in that I can't imagine true love without an equally deep friendship. I find the romantic love lessened if it's separated from friendship. Though this is just my personal thoughts, of course.

Re: 32

[identity profile] fraught.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
They don't need to have conversations! IT'S TWU WUV, DON'T YOU GET IT?! You're just supposed to accept that they've (maybe) had Deep And Meaningful(tm) conversations off-screen because Rowling couldn't be arsed to actually write H/G in any matter resembling "believable", and that their relationship isn't based on looks and Quidditch and snogging in dark corners.

Wordy McWord to your whole comment :)

Re: 32

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't say you had to accept it. I said *I* would much rather have H/G as a regular teenager thing where they snog a lot, than as a deep meaningful TWU WUV bunch of cheesy crap that distracts from the main plot.

The OP was saying they couldn't understand how ANYONE could like it, I'm saying why I do. Sorry if it breaks your little world to know that someone zomg likes H/G as it is in the books.

Re: 32

(Anonymous) 2008-02-23 10:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's clearly breaking your little world to know a lot of people hate H/G. Are you so insecure you need everyone to agree with you while you ape the author's ideas? Because like, all of your comments here have been all personalised, about how YOU like it, and YOU need to attack other people because they don't. Maybe because the pairing is so shit you can't defend it with actual evidence.

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Other than the snarky comment above, where did I attack people for not liking it?

My only problem is that not liking it/believing it was badly written somehow needs to equal 'OMG HOW CAN ANYONE LIKE IT' and it has to bash those who DO like it.

Re: 32

[identity profile] fraught.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Trust me, it doesn't break my little world. Everyone has different tastes, after all; one person's poison is another person's pretty birthday cake. I probably could've liked H/G if it had been a simple regular teenage snogging thing, but I absolutely can't buy it as a true love thing that lasts as long as it does. I'm with the OP, actually, I don't get how ANYONE could like it. But then again, I also don't get why people buy Britney Spears albums or pay good money to watch Adam Sandler movies, so there you have it.

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I'll direct you to my first comment? That's mostly why *I* like it. I think they're compatible, and I think it's that overall what makes it believable for them to last for as long as they do.

I don't think it was the most epic romance ever written or anything, btw! JKR writes awesome friendships, not awesome romances.

It just seemed like you felt I was trying to convince others that they should like it, when I'm really not :/

Re: 32

(Anonymous) 2008-02-23 11:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, you're really overinvested in this. Some people don't like your ship and/or feel it wasn't well written. Get over it.

Re: 32

[identity profile] jlarinda.livejournal.com 2008-02-23 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
... S-sure? I know a lot of people don't like it. It's the HP fandom, someone's always going to hate something I like. Being that it's one of the friggin' main pairings, believe me, I'm aware of people not liking it.
