I've tried to enjoy the movies for what they are, on a separate level from book adaptations, but... I still kind of fail. I can forgive them not being good adaptations, but it's disappointing that they weren't even good movies.

Not OP - but have you seen the Extended Editions? I think they made the movies so much better.

I haven't, but I was reluctant to invest the time because I wasn't sure it'd help. How did the extra footage improve them, in your opinion?

Yeah, it is quite a time investment!

This is totally YMMV but to me, particularly in the last two, there are plot threads that are given much more substance and actually not just left hanging. Some of the decisions and concepts - such as with what Gandalf is up to and why, or why the arkenstone is so important - are addressed.

Essentially, I feel that after the EEs, the trilogy stands so much more on its own - where you don't have to fill in gaps with knowledge of the books. They tie together better and are fuller movies.

But, I'll say all that with the caveat that it may really depend on what you didn't care for about them in the first place. As adaptations of the book, the EEs don't necessarily bring them any closer to the source material. They just make for stronger movies in a general sense.

I hope that makes sense! So, if the divergence from the source is one of the reasons you didn't care for them... I can't say that the EEs would help.

Thanks for such a detailed reply! I'm not a stickler for the movies being exactly like the source material. It's nice when an adaptation does that, but if it strays a bit and I like the result, I'm fine with it. It would help if the extra footage make the trilogy feel less choppy and forced, though.

Thank you again, and maybe I will give them a try after all. :)

No problem!

Yeah, I definitely think the trilogy feels much less choppy and forced in the EEs. In the original cuts, there were so many times it was just like 'Wait a sec, they're here now?' or 'So this shapeshifter guy is just gonna be immediately okay with a dozen dwarves hanging out in his house?' or 'That trip through the Mirkwood was kinda dull" or 'How did they get through that entire army of Orcs and get to Raven Hill?' ... Lots of that is fixed.
