I'm in the same boat. I know they are not all that good but I am still obsessed.

I'm the same with the live action Transformers movies, I know they are trash but I still love them

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I liked them, too. You're not alone, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've tried to enjoy the movies for what they are, on a separate level from book adaptations, but... I still kind of fail. I can forgive them not being good adaptations, but it's disappointing that they weren't even good movies.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP - but have you seen the Extended Editions? I think they made the movies so much better.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't, but I was reluctant to invest the time because I wasn't sure it'd help. How did the extra footage improve them, in your opinion?

Even when the company arrived at the mountain, couldn't get in, and immediately started walking away? I didn't hate that moment, but it had me laughing so hard because it was so out of character for book or movie verse.

That was SO weird. They gave up so fast!

Me tooooo~
I'm a huge fan of Tolkien and have been for nearly my entire life, and I do think that there were things about the Hobbit movies that could have been handled better, but I went in expecting a different tone than LotR because the tone of the book was different, so I wasn't as shocked or horrified that it wasn't the same kind of movie as LotR. What it was was just the kind of movies that I would have wet my pants with joy over when I was still a bit too young to fully appreciate the LotR movies, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. It was like all of my 10 year old dreams coming true, including Tauriel, who was EXACTLY my childhood-fantasy-self-insert-imaginary-character come to life. I couldn't NOT become passionately attached to a character and a set of movies which so nearly perfectly fulfilled all my childhood fantasies. Except for Alfred, who could have stood a bit of role reduction in the 3rd film. But whatevs, I didn't feel that it ruined the movie.

My only gripe with Tauriel is that they needed to give her her own proper battle scene, and I was angry at the production that they didn't.

I'm with you OP. Actually, I liked them initially but was a bit underwhelmed (I think it was a combination of expectations being too high, and the filming) but since then, watching all the EEs and the bts stuff made me adore them... I think they're made so much better in the EEs.

[personal profile] lady_dragoon 2015-12-09 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Same. No adaptation is perfect but I love these films.

Is it much of a surprise that agree with you? These movies made me care about the dwarves of the Company, even if the movies did not use them to best effect.

I like the first movie the best, but even it has some faults. I could have done without Tauriel and with far less Legolas (I don't mind him being there, but I feel he stole too much screentime) and absolutely no Alfrid. If they were going to have an annoying money-grubbing human, couldn't they have left that role to the Master of Laketown, who had it originally? I'm sure Steven Fry would have done it well.

But yes, they are not spectacular adaptions, they don't stand up to LotR (and Fandom knows people have nitpicked those movies to the Void and back), but I am still glad they happened because they made me care about Dwarves in a way that Gimli failed.

I am getting a little bugged by people saying "adaption." Isn't "adaptation" standard?
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-12-09 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
No? I've heard both used. According to Grammerist they are both different forms of the same word and interchangeable: http://grammarist.com/usage/adaption-adaptation/

Oops, I didn't look close enough at what you said. That's probably a case of synonyms at work.

They're both valid, but for some reason I just can't stand "adaption."

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, I think I only love these films for shipping-related reasons. I am the lowest form of scum.

I like the universe and characters, but movie-wise they did a shit job at telling that story, and mostly for greed of drawing it out over so many movie hours.

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-12-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of agree? I genuinely loved the first film as a whole and thought the next two were kind of messes. ...Messes with some entertaining bits, especially The Battle of the Five Armies.

I will admit that the Thorin/Bilbo scenes are one of my biggest reasons for liking the trilogy, as well as the amazing (and underutilized) cast, and the simple fact that they're more Tolkien. Even 'bad' Tolkien is kind of magical to me.

If PJ had just tightened the film up and not included so many 'extras' (focus on the dwarves instead of the elves, etc) I would've thought they were great films.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I hated them but I certainly stand by your right to like them. I love some super shitty movies with all my heart that I can't defend. Everyone has their thing, so go boldly and love yours.

For me, I think what bothers me the most is that I can see how the movies COULD have been good. I like most of the cast. The sets and costumes, etc. were really good. But even when I can put away my Tolkien-purist hat, the movies just aren't satisfying. I didn't cry when Thorin died. You had 9 hours to invest me in him and I even liked him but there was no emotional weight to his death. Not like Boromir if FOTR. And the movies are also really lazy. They start all sorts of threads (Arkenstone, Thranduil's jewels, Beorn, BoFA itself) that don't go anywhere. How am I supposed to invest in anything in the movies if THEY don't seem to care about them?

I found the EE disappointing too. It doesn't do nearly enough to fix the core issues of the movie. Even when you see a shot of Thorin with the Arkenstone, that doesn't tell me anything about how he got it and what it means for Bard and for the relationship going forward among all these people - a conflict that's pretty central to the movie. I thought the battle itself was confusing (never had this problem with LOTR battles, which actually helped me visualize the book better) and throwaway because the movie didn't give it any stakes.

All the additions the filmmakers brought in were really lazy. They didn't put in the effort to really incorporate them into the series. Even if there's a reason for all this stuff because of production issues, it doesn't change the fact of what was actually presented to us. And I really hated what we got. (Love picking it apart though.)

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that was one of my main complaints, too. You've been building up these characters for three movies but when they die-- not just Thorin, but Fili and Kili-- there's no weight to it, no time to mourn their loss. What they should've done was trim some time off the dozens of absurd fight scenes and let people see the aftermath of the battle. Without that, it feels rushed and without closure.

There are still things I enjoy about the movies but they could have been better, I like the first one the best and the other two are okay. But I think it should have been one movie or two tbh, three was too much imo.
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-12-09 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I personally say two. I think it needed two so we could be invested in Thorin and his friendship with Bilbo. But three was pushing it way too far, and it showed.

Yep, I really love them too, even though some things could have been done in a better way (and there could have been more focus on the dwarves (especially the more minor ones; why do all that character development only to drop it?) in the second and third movie).
But yeah, they reall brought the characters to life for me.
