I think that removing the love triangle would have improved the movies, it really bogged down her character.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I don't really get making the effort to write an OFC into the plot only to have her spend half her time mooning around over some dwarf she just met. Maybe if they'd had more time and interaction, it would've felt natural, but it felt very forced to me in the films.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Maybe if they'd had the time they decided to devote to making Legolas act like a weirdo about the whole thing it would have worked, idk. Not like it would have salvaged the whole as a whole, but...

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The sad part is, it was actually forced. The actress originally signed on because she was promised that her character would not have a romance sub-plot and initially everything was filmed without any romance. But later they filmed additional scenes, including the romance ones and she was now contract-bound to do them.
so yeah, the love triangle was tricked into existence.

Yes...and to be honest? To give her a hero's death. It makes no sense she survives and is never seen again.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt

I hated the character, and I hated even more that they didn't have the decency to kill her off. It makes zero sense that she survives. I mean, either way, she ruins Legolas's character in Lord of the Rings, and the supposed groundbreaking friendship between him and Gimli. But it makes even less sense that she's not dead.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Very true.

[personal profile] ketita 2015-12-10 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. It wouldn't have even felt out of place, considering the Dwarf deaths...

Right? It would have made sense thematically.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
But if they'd killed her people would have moaned about 'fridging the female character...again'.

I absolutely loathe the Kili/Tauriel romance. I don't really care for Tauriel but Kili is the one I really hate. I can't stand his character at all.

I hate Tauriel the most for the character assassination that was done to Thranduil and Legolas to lift her up. I can kind of see what they were doing with Thranduil but there was no excuse for what they did to Legolas. It didn't serve the story. It was stupid.

If they hadn't done that, I would've liked her better.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't expect to like Tauriel in the films but I really did. Agree completely about the love triangle though.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I like her because she's hot.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You liked her, and the romance? Well I can see why this is a secret, lol.

I've got no issue with Tauriel-the-character, but I'm mightiliy annoyed at how her only purpose is to be a tragically impossible love interest.

I would've been 100% more okay with the Tauriel-Kili relationship and Legolas' presence around it if they had used it as thematic foreshadowing of Gimli.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
I was actually pleasantly surprised at how little I minded the first parts of the Tauriel/Kíli romance (not a fan of het romance and adding a female character in just to be a love interest had me hating it before I saw DoS, but yeah...). And then the triangle came in... :/

I quite liked Tauriel and while I wasn't a fan of Kili/Tauriel I didn't mind it in DoS so much but it jumping to 'true love' in BoTFA and the weird sort-of love triangle with Legolas really bogged down her character for me.

I still enjoyed her but eh, could have done without either of those things.

I think that most stories with love triangles in them would be improved by not having a love triangle.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Disliking love triangles, good job, you all have wildly interesting opinions I've never heard before.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's nobody's fault but your own if you decided to read a bunch of comments you didn't like, tho.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
wait, it was our job to have opinions you haven't heard before?

I admit, I walked into DoS wanting to ignore the romance (and frankly I thought it easy enough to ignore), but Tauriel was not a bad character, at least in that movie. I do feel they derailed her in BotFA though - she was too hung up on Kíli that it shot her "Badass Elf Woman" image to shit. I didn't really care about the triangle, though there was too much Legolas in the third movie.

You know, one of the two RP timelines I play at the moment grew out of Valandhir and I chatting about what if it wasn't Tauriel who healed Kíli of the arrow wound and thereby is obsession with her never developed? We came up with that right after DoS (then I got into Dragon Age and a crossover happened).

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
I actually really liked her and while I wasn't expecting to enjoy Kili/Tauriel I actually found myself thinking they were quite sweet. On the other hand, I hated the triangle and they did her character dirty in the last movie.
