I think that removing the love triangle would have improved the movies, it really bogged down her character.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-09 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I don't really get making the effort to write an OFC into the plot only to have her spend half her time mooning around over some dwarf she just met. Maybe if they'd had more time and interaction, it would've felt natural, but it felt very forced to me in the films.

Yeah. Maybe if they'd had the time they decided to devote to making Legolas act like a weirdo about the whole thing it would have worked, idk. Not like it would have salvaged the whole as a whole, but...

The sad part is, it was actually forced. The actress originally signed on because she was promised that her character would not have a romance sub-plot and initially everything was filmed without any romance. But later they filmed additional scenes, including the romance ones and she was now contract-bound to do them.
so yeah, the love triangle was tricked into existence.

Yes...and to be honest? To give her a hero's death. It makes no sense she survives and is never seen again.

nayrt

I hated the character, and I hated even more that they didn't have the decency to kill her off. It makes zero sense that she survives. I mean, either way, she ruins Legolas's character in Lord of the Rings, and the supposed groundbreaking friendship between him and Gimli. But it makes even less sense that she's not dead.

Very true.

Yeah. It wouldn't have even felt out of place, considering the Dwarf deaths...

Right? It would have made sense thematically.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
But if they'd killed her people would have moaned about 'fridging the female character...again'.

But it's not fridging if it's at the end of a movie and her death is not used to cause manpain.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I mean, maybe they could have twisted it as a thing that upset Legolas, but he hardly seemed to be angsting about it in LotR

Well, to be fair, you'd probably STILL get idiots complaining about fridging, but they'd be wrong.
