Hobbit Movies

How many people here dislike them? I get the feeling FS skews more towards liking.

Re: Hobbit Movies

Complete and utter apathy.

Don't like them, but don't dislike them enough to feel the need to bitch about them on the internet.

Re: Hobbit Movies

The first was OK. I was invited on a walk with a friend halfway through the second one a year and a half ago, which seemed more appealing, and I haven't been back since.

Didn't care for them, but didn't dislike them.

Which was sad really, because the LoTR movies were full of moments that looked exactly how I imagined them and the Hobbit movies have been the dead opposite.

And no Tom Bombadill basically made me go into them being less than enthused.

They were approximately six hours too long.

I liked them. My sister LOVED them.

Saw the first one, didn't care enough to see the rest of them. Maybe someday.

Complete garbage to the point where I have no idea how anyone could find them enjoyable. There may have been a cute moment here or there (mostly just Bilbo moments, who by the way was hardly in it) but it was ridiculously long, horribly paced, terrible original dialogue and awful overall presentation. A weird mix between campy cheesiness and forced seriousness.

I like the universe, and the characters.

But story-wise I think they're bad movies.

Re: Hobbit Movies

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I liked them. Objectively speaking, they have plenty of faults and are nowhere near as good as LotR, but somehow I'm still really fond of them.

I think it has something to do with Bilbo. Even though the Hobbit technically has way more characters, it focuses on fewer of them compared to LotR. At least it feels that way to me. I just genuinely liked Bilbo. Not that I disliked the LotR characters, I thought they were heroic or funny or whatever. But Bilbo I just like.

never bothered to see them because I knew I'd hate them

(I walked out of Fellowship round about Weathertop and never saw the rest of the movies either)

They were ok. The first one was actually kind of memorable, but the other two were kind of meh. I'll get them all eventually. But LotR will be the better of the trilogies.

Re: Hobbit Movies

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I dislike them, mostly. It's personal for me, because I grew up reading the books, my mum's a hardcore LOTR fan and was so excited for the movies. It was terrible to see her disappointment.

On the other hand, I do really like Richard Armitage as Thorin, and I must admit Martin Freeman made a good Bilbo. The guy who played Bard was also pretty good. There was potential there, but it was wasted.

/raises hand

I wasn't expecting a carbon copy of LOTR because I know the style and story of The Hobbit is different, but the films were just... really meh. Great cast, but slapdash writing, and sadly sub par cinematography and special effects. It's really disappointing when they came out and it didn't look as good as films that were made by the same people, ten years earlier.

I like bits of them. I really enjoyed them in the beginning, but the canon changes have started to bug me more and more. So I'm in the middle. Some parts were really well done, but a majority of them weren't.

I still quite enjoy the first one but the second and last are very spotty for me, there are bits I like but overall I think three movies was too much.

2. They're stretching it.

Mild affection. I never bothered watching the third one.

I am grateful for the expansion of the minor dwarf characters though. I read a lot of fanfic about them, especially Dori, Nori, and Ori.

I enjoyed bits of the first one and completely loathed the second one. Gave up at that point and didn't see the third.

I didn't...hate them? But they definitely were not as amazing/awesome/emotional to me as the LotR trilogy. I really, really, really wished they'd just done one two-hour or 2.5 hour long Hobbit movie instead of *three*. It was just too much.

I... have mixed feelings, depending on which episode you ask about, but the primary feeling is that I like them for bringing me back to Middle-Earth, helping me like the dwarves, and giving me a jumping-off point for RP.

The first movie I really like. I feel it stands up fine next to LotR.

DoS I feel started losing a bit, with the canon it skimped on and the non-canon it started inserting.

BotFA... It was not good. Not Good enough that I still haven't bought the DVD/Blu-ray of it. I'll probably get it soon because the EE is now out, but I'm not sure I will bother watching it again myself, that how much it annoyed me.

I'm not saying I wish they didn't exist, but I see the faults, especially in the latter two movies. But I am still glad of them because they gave me Kizár and her adventures with her brother.

Re: Hobbit Movies

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I liked the first one. But the second and third need to be cut into a single movie and some things (like Legolas and that fucking guy in Laketown and the entire sequence with the dragon chasing the dwarves around the mountain for like 45 FUCKING MINUTES) need to go completely.
