What with all the recent national news, shootings in theaters and shit, and some local stuff ("What we need are MORE guns!")... I am honestly scared shitless to go out to the movies. Which sucks, because there are movies I wanna see, and I keep watching them slip away. Help me not be stupid. :(

You are safer at the movies than you are in your car.

Fear is understandable OP. I remember after the 2012 Aurora shooting my mom got really freaked out about me going to the theaters, and I couldn't even really blame her even though we lived in a smaller town where none of that happened. Would going with reassuring friends help you? Also going during not busy times, so its less intimidating?

Reassuring friends would probably help, but my friends are not that type, hah. Part of the problem is I'm running out of excuses to not see movies I've shown an interest in.

There is an army vehicle and half a dozen of armed soldiers at my local cinema. Hell that's enough to feel unsafe.

But, if I've learned anything - you can't live life in fear. I mean, you can,but then you can still die in a toaster accident in your own kitchen without having lived.

Go out. Do what you love. Otherwise the terrorists have already won.

I didn't expect "Go see a movie or the terrorists win" but that actually makes me feel a little bit better. Thank you.

I can't say I know how you feel, but I've heard the same sentiment expressed by a lot of my friends who are living in America right now so I know how prevalent that fear is.

It sucks. Stuff needs to change.

If you want to avoid the movie theatre, do it because everything is ridiculously overpriced and stupid and of shitty quality, not because you're afraid some asshole is going to shoot up the place.

Hell, any guy could shoot up any place that you decide to go. Technically, the movies aren't any safer than the grocery store or church or even your neighborhood.

If you just don't want to miss a movie, there's always Netflix or Redbox. You'll have to wait a few months but at least you'll save some cash.

There's a risk to everything. The risk with being too afraid to do something is that you miss out.

I know how you feel, OP.I live near San Bernardino and, after the recent shooting, I just want to build an underground bunker and not go anywhere, but that's no way to live. We had a holiday party at work today and I kept looking out the windows in case there were any suspicious people outside, but as the party went on, I forgot to keep an eye out for psychos. I was having too much fun cracking jokes and gossiping with my coworkers. I got some neat Doctor Who stuff from my Secret Santa too. I guess you just have to try and power through your fear. What's the point of being alive if you're too afraid to have fun?
