Going out on a theoretical limb, here, but maybe one of the reasons there is some whining from the non-American side of things is that, unlike a lot of other American media with which the world is inundated, this is very truly American and based on American history. You can't "universalize" it in any sense, and remember that the world market is saturated with American media. It could just be a case of backlash.

Again though with the example of Les Mis being universally popular. It's truly French and based on French history, yet there's none of that... "I don't understand this!" and "I'm not French so why would I care about it?" I also do think there's something a bit more insidious in some of the Hamilton hate that I've seen, a bit more harmful.

In any case, it's fine if they don't want to listen to it or watch it, but the backlash is... silly to say the least. This is an American musical written by Americans, starring Americans, and released in America. It's a bit asinine to complain about it being 'too American'. Just ignore it.
