I'm just excited that people care about a fandom that is so inundated with non-white characters for once.*

I'm sure someone thinks it's rubbish. They're wrong though. There are certainly people complaining about the hype. I've seen a decent number of non-Americans whining because 'they just don't care about it, it's about American history!' which I guess is fine, but it's not like Les Miserables being about French history stopped people from obsessing over it, so maybe they should give it a shot (no pun intended).

*Aside from animation fandoms, this is rare as hell.

As a Brit, who should probably hate this show due to being British, it has been my jam for roughly the last 3 months. It's an epic revolutionary story, there's practically no perfect character, and can we talk about how good the music is?

And as you brought up Les Mis, that's precisely my argument for why it'll work over here. Our rivalry with the French gets put aside, and we all enjoy Les Mis for the story it tells. And In The Heights, LMM's other genius work is currently getting rave reviews and got a whole lot of nominations in the What's On Stage awards.

So yeah, I'm there for the West End previews, as soon as it makes the jump across the Atlantic. (And then Hamilton should "come home" to Scotland.)

Going out on a theoretical limb, here, but maybe one of the reasons there is some whining from the non-American side of things is that, unlike a lot of other American media with which the world is inundated, this is very truly American and based on American history. You can't "universalize" it in any sense, and remember that the world market is saturated with American media. It could just be a case of backlash.

Again though with the example of Les Mis being universally popular. It's truly French and based on French history, yet there's none of that... "I don't understand this!" and "I'm not French so why would I care about it?" I also do think there's something a bit more insidious in some of the Hamilton hate that I've seen, a bit more harmful.

In any case, it's fine if they don't want to listen to it or watch it, but the backlash is... silly to say the least. This is an American musical written by Americans, starring Americans, and released in America. It's a bit asinine to complain about it being 'too American'. Just ignore it.
