I haven't seen any of it, but I've read a fair bit of the lyrics, and from a literary standpoint, some of them are plain amazing. So there's AT LEAST that. It may, of course, be that everything else is rubbish.

You think people are just pretending to like Hamilton?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
I think - from a more generous point of view - OP is more surprised by how universal the acclaim and popularity is?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-10 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Er... my first thought was "Daveed Diggs, yay!" because he is the father of my unborn children.

But hey, if you don't care for Hamilton (which I assume this secret is about) then cool. I know it's taken over everywhere, so backlash is about to start any moment now. I can understand for that alone why it might be annoying. Plus, it just might not work for you. Works for ME, but it's okay (and even refreshing, honestly) to be different.

10 mins of an online video seems like a bad way to judge theater

It is the Internet. You are never the only person who hates something. Tho IMHO, rushing to be the first person to hate on a popular thing is kinda boring.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can't believe you actually said "I've only seen 10 minutes posted online" and "why hasn't anyone said this is a bit rubbish?" in the same post.

Like...seriously, how utterly moronic do you have to be to write those two phrases right after one another and NOT think to yourself "hmm...maybe, just maybe, my logic here is seriously flawed given that my evidence is severely lacking"? Seriously?

I mean, sure, you might still think it's rubbish if you saw the whole thing, but how, how, how can anyone possibly decide that everyone who actually saw a whole play must be wrong while someone who watched 10 minutes of a videotaped clip of a play online must be right?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I think a substantial proportion of the people gushing about it online haven't seen it either. My facebook feed is full of folks who are obsessed with it based on clips and/or the soundtrack, but I don't think I know anyone who has actually seen it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's also pretty dumb, but it's still at least possible to genuinely like clips or a soundtrack, even if you wouldn't like the play itself and therefore can't make a legit claim about whether the full play is good or not.

But to assume that 1) you know better than people who have actually seen it and 2) the people who like it (whether they like the actual play or the random clips they've seen) are just PRETENDING to like it is a whole other league of dumb.

PEDANTRY ALERT: due to the nature of Broadway theater (exclusive both in terms of cost and geography), lots of musical nerds have only listened to the cast album of certain musicals. Usually, this means that they miss out on the book (regular play) bits of the musical, but Hamilton is rapped and sung through, so they hear everything but one scene.

I agree that ten minutes doesn't give the whole picture, but it's probably long enough to let a person know that a piece of art isn't something they's like. Which doesn't make it "rubbish," just not a thing OP would enjoy. I don't see the point of forcing yourself to watch an entire play or movie to confirm the hypothesis, but again--that's taste, not the quality of the work.

I confess I am very bored by the Hamilton-squee by (mostly) American friends on my Facebook feed, but I admit that's because I don't care for rap and am not very interested in that period of American history. I wouldn't say that means the musical is rubbish--just that it's not something I'm interested in checking out.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I've listened to the whole soundtrack and watched what I could, and I have to say, I don't get the hype at all.

It may be personal taste but I didn't like that many of the songs (maybe 2 or 3) and when I'm really into a musical I usually like all the songs or near all of them.

The story was fine but nothing remarkable.

It may be something I need to see live but most of my fav musicals were able to grab me before I was ever able to see a performance, so I'm not super motivated to see this.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Not everyone will like everything. That's how it goes.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's very true. That's also why I prefer people not overhype things for me or act like I'm crazy when I don't like something. Hamilton fandom has being doing both lately.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
All fandoms are crazy. This shit is in no way particular to Hamilton fandom.

I mean, I know people are going to get salty about it and it's going to become an awful, draining fight, because that's what literally always happens, but still. I'm going to keep enjoying it as long as I can.

Emperor's New Clothes?

But...but you just said YOU HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN THE PLAY.

This is like deciding that the Emperor is naked, and everyone is lying about it for some reason, because the only part of his entire body you've seen is a photograph of his bare wrists.

Sure, it COULD be that he's naked....or it could be that the style of his outfit has 3/4 length sleeves, and it could be that everyone who has ACTUALLY SEEN HIM just might have a better idea of whether he's naked or not than someone who has only seen a glimpse of the emperor's wrists.

With anything popular, there's always going to be a backlash. Just wait three months and your day will come, anon.

I, personally, think it's a work of staggering genius, but so it goes.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I listened to about forty minutes of it online and while some of the lyrics were good and the songs were energetic, none of them were catchy and made me want to keep listening. So yeah, unless there are some great songs that I didn't hear, it's definitely a case of over-hype.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
I don't agree that it's a case of "over-hype".

It's a case where the people talking about it liked it more than you did.

Shit happens sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I've heard bits of the soundtrack and seen clips and it's not my kind of music, so I'm not getting the hype either. But I know that happens when I just hear/see bits of it and not the whole show. Seeing the show is the whole experience, so. But I was in New York to see some shows and it wasn't even on my list of wanna's.

I'm just excited that people care about a fandom that is so inundated with non-white characters for once.*

I'm sure someone thinks it's rubbish. They're wrong though. There are certainly people complaining about the hype. I've seen a decent number of non-Americans whining because 'they just don't care about it, it's about American history!' which I guess is fine, but it's not like Les Miserables being about French history stopped people from obsessing over it, so maybe they should give it a shot (no pun intended).

*Aside from animation fandoms, this is rare as hell.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 08:51 am (UTC)(link)
As a Brit, who should probably hate this show due to being British, it has been my jam for roughly the last 3 months. It's an epic revolutionary story, there's practically no perfect character, and can we talk about how good the music is?

And as you brought up Les Mis, that's precisely my argument for why it'll work over here. Our rivalry with the French gets put aside, and we all enjoy Les Mis for the story it tells. And In The Heights, LMM's other genius work is currently getting rave reviews and got a whole lot of nominations in the What's On Stage awards.

So yeah, I'm there for the West End previews, as soon as it makes the jump across the Atlantic. (And then Hamilton should "come home" to Scotland.)

Going out on a theoretical limb, here, but maybe one of the reasons there is some whining from the non-American side of things is that, unlike a lot of other American media with which the world is inundated, this is very truly American and based on American history. You can't "universalize" it in any sense, and remember that the world market is saturated with American media. It could just be a case of backlash.
iggy: (Default)

[personal profile] iggy 2015-12-12 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Again though with the example of Les Mis being universally popular. It's truly French and based on French history, yet there's none of that... "I don't understand this!" and "I'm not French so why would I care about it?" I also do think there's something a bit more insidious in some of the Hamilton hate that I've seen, a bit more harmful.

In any case, it's fine if they don't want to listen to it or watch it, but the backlash is... silly to say the least. This is an American musical written by Americans, starring Americans, and released in America. It's a bit asinine to complain about it being 'too American'. Just ignore it.
