I recently watched ATS on Netflix and...yeah. I had the hots for this guy as a teen but I think about midway through Series 2, specifically when Cordy, Wes and Gunn are fired (and have that brilliant karioke scene), I realized how much better the show would be if it was just about them and how much I hated it kept cutting back to Angel and his dwama. I hoped they were breaking him down to build his character back up but...it just stayed that way. Even when Spike appered, it was like; "Why do we even need Angel anymore?"

Honestly, I thought his going to turning-evil-and-going-to-hell arc was really well done.

Yeah he's a bit broody, but frankly that's what people want from the genre.

Was broody vampire as much of a thing back then, though? I guess there's Anne Rice...

(Noting that BTVS is basically the only exposure I have really had to the vampire genre. So I admittedly ask in total ignorance.)

Well, more like broody/rebellious love interest for young female protagonist... not necessarily vampire, but that genre specifically seems to go with it.

Do they? Because an immortal creature brooding *because they're immortal* makes me angry when they are actually not. I don't think i've read a single story-with-vampires where something couldn't actually kill them.

I always felt like if Louis was really so unhappy, he could have just offed himself and been done with it. Same for Angel, really.

(Sorry, i just got sick of the broody, angsty vampire a loooong time ago.)

There's a lot of miserable people in real life who don't off themselves, though. Just saying. Like you can be unhappy but still not want to die.

Oh, i know. I'm just saying - a lot of vampire stories have the vamp character all 'whaaaaaa, i must live with myself foreeeeever!!' when they don't actually have to.

Like i said - the broody/angsty vamp is just so boring. I'd really love to see some vamps actually *do* things. Have lives, instead of moaning around about how awful their unlife is.

Well to be fair, the book acknowledges that. Part of Louis's problem is that he just can't bring himself to kill himself, even though he knows that would solve his problems. He hates himself as much for being a coward as for being a vampire.

It's been so long since I've read that book, I don't even remember him thinking about it. Not sure if I could bring myself to re-read, at this point....

In a later book (Merrick, IIRC), he does actually try to kill himself, but by that point he's old enough to survive direct sunlight.

Lovers Walk in S3 is one of my favourite episodes because we see Spike almost as a parody of the brooding vamp as he mopes for Drusilla and then at the end just says "fuck it, I'll be the bloodthirsty monster she likes and if that's not enough, who cares" and drives off singing that death-metal cover of My Way. ^_^

I kind of like how in the first couple of episodes that Angel disappeared he was kind of snarky. But then him and Buffy became a thing and it seemed to be non-stop angst with the guy.

We got Spike though and he was cool (till the rape thing anyway).
