I'm disgusted to learn that even tennant is a kilgrave apologist. I knew I was going to hate him for this role, but I didn't realise how much I was going to hate him as a person.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You're kidding. Wow. :O Dude does not get it apparently.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
Are you just OP replying to themselves, or are you actually that credulous?

He never actually said that. Fans of the character did.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
a) citation please

b) what are you talking about, hating him for the role

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
He said he thinks Kilgrave is misunderstood and needs a hug.

He's playing a rapist. It's difficult for anyone, especially a woman, but anyone to look at someone the same way after seeing them commit sexual atrocities that women face every single day. I knew I wasn't going to be able to see him in anything again without thinking "Rapist"

I did not expect to find that he was worse than just playing a rapist.

I mean, it's awful he said that, but you should start learning to disassociate characters from their actors. Fiction is not real life and your attitude seems unhealthy.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Only he didn't say it.

Can we have the context of that comment so we can properly judge?

Like, where did he say this? Can we have a link to the comment/interview/whatever?

Sorry but it's the internet and I'm a little wary of people going "oh so and so TOTALLY said this and now they're a horrible awful person I can never forgive".

DA

I dug a little and so far I didn't find anything other than Tennant fans saying that THEY felt like giving Kilgrave a hug because David was playing him -- which is far different than the ACTOR saying that.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I thought so.

That doesn't sound like Tennant to me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Hi, actual rape survivor here. Fuck off. I'm still perfectly capable of separating actor from role, and that's your fucking damage if you can't.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen him say in a couple places that Kilgrave doesn't understand that what he's doing is wrong, and that having such a power might be corruptive, but I don't think he meant that to defend Kilgrave's actions. Isn't it natural for an actor to understand where their character is coming from, even if what they do is horrible?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Any good actor needs to feel some sympathy for the character they play. They need to get in that character's head, understand that character's motivations and feelings, and portray them accordingly. Any actor who just says "well, the character I play is a disgusting monster" is going to do a shit job.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly, and this directly applies to Kilgrave's character in particular. He doesn't think that he's doing anything wrong. In his mind, Jessica is the one being unreasonable and nuts for not appreciating all the things he does for her. He genuinely believes that if she just gave him a chance, she'd understand that he loves her and would return his love.

It's what makes him such an amazingly villainous character. He's not some huge muscle bound guy who goes around decapitating other people or blasting cities to smithereens, he's a guy that gets inside peoples' heads and fucks them up, all while thinking that he's a nice guy.

They need to get in that character's head, understand that character's motivations and feelings, and portray them accordingly.

Exactly. As much as I loathe Kilgrave, I can understand this; actors have to figure out what drives the character, what their philosophy is or how they see the world. They have to run with that. If they aren't convinced of that characters mindset they aren't going to put on a good show.

Any actor who just says "well, the character I play is a disgusting monster" is going to do a shit job.

I do KIND of disagree with this, though. Well, in the sense that I've seen some very convincing villainous actors say, "The character I play is a monster", but it was never just that. They always found them likable or compelling or fascinating in some way, so the fact that the character wasn't just monstrous made them intrigued instead of simply disgusted.

Any actor who just says "well, the character I play is a disgusting monster" is going to do a shit job.

Counter example: Robert Pattinson's sparkly creepy psychopath Edward Cullen.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
That's a perfect straight example actually. He hated his character and his acting was shit.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but his acting wasn't shit because he hated the character, his acting was shit because he's a pretty shit actor in general.

Really? He did fine with Cedric.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Where did he say this? The interview he did with Seth Meyers saw was far more nuanced and correct in which he said:

“I don’t think anyone who is perceived as a villain believes themselves to be a villain,” Tennant said. “Donald Trump doesn’t think he’s a villain.”

http://www.ew.com/article/2015/11/24/david-tennant-jessica-jones-villain-late-night

I think it's pretty clear he doesn't think Kilgrave is a good guy.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks

though I had a really hard time believing Tennant would say something like AYRT claimed. At least not seriously.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
TBH I think AYRT heard

“I don’t think anyone who is perceived as a villain believes themselves to be a villain,” Tennant said. “Donald Trump doesn’t think he’s a villain.”

and in her mind that translates to "he's misunderstood and just needs a hug".

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
Either that or they're sourcing their info from tumblr.
