There are lots of people though who believe that depicting rape at all is always bad. Have known a few personally and seen lots of it online.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I am always sickened to meet people who think portraying rape is ever necessary let alone GOOD.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sure. Because preventing to portray a horrible thing will make it go away.

What's wrong with showing rape scenes if the context of the story portrays it as an evil thing? Murder and violence are being shown too.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Writers are going to write about the world around them. Sometimes that'll mean having to write about the bad shit that happens in our world, too.

Plus, some people who've been raped may want to write about their experience as a means of helping other victims realize they aren't alone.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Your second point exactly. When there are no representations/talk about a thing, it is much, much harder for victims to put what happened to them into reasonable terms. If you don't have a cultural climate where it's acknowledged that it's a thing that happens, and that when it does, it means this and this and this, it makes things much more difficult for survivors.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well said. How are we supposed to deal with, educate others about, or try and stop these horrors if we don't actually address and talk about them?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Because preventing to portray a horrible thing will prevent the type of people who glorify it from being inspired to go out and do it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
wat. and people who never watch porn or read raunchy things don't have sex ever. and people who watched Die Hard all immediately went out and held a building of people hostage.

i doubt that people who are already inclined to rape are going to suddenly go, "oh well there's a rape scene in this show, so i guess it's cool!"

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
You doubt it because it doesn't happen.

This is the same argument as "video games cause people to shoot up schools!!!!"

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
It's the same argument as "that evul rap music is poisening the minds of our children".

*Helen Lovejoy voice on* The children! Would someone please finally think for once about the children!!! D:

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, no.

Look.

Fiction doesn't turn people bad.

People who commit horroble crimes are fucked up in the first place. And they know that the things they are doing are horrible. They simple do not give a fuck and do it anyway.

And you realize that the brain of psychopaths literally malfuntion? Science has proven that their brains are messed up in the emotional area.

*sarcasm on* It's not the evil rock n' roll and that dammned colourful cinema with its suspiscious moving pictures that messed up the innocent kids. *sarcasm off*

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Precisely. Some criminals might've gotten some ideas on how to commit their crimes from something they watched or read, perhaps, but your statement about them being fucked up to begin with is spot on.

There's also the fact that violence has been around well before television or movies or books were a thing. They didn't have that stuff around to blame for their actions, so for those who think fiction turns people violent, how do you explain that?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-11 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
DA. Wait... what? So acknowledging that it's a thing that (very very unfortunately) does happen in real life, and portraying it in fiction should never ever happen?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
No. Everything should be like Leave It To Beaver.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
;___; Noooooo. Where will I get my 'splosions?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
As opposed to murder? Murder is, objectively, worse than rape. I assume you don't want that ever portrayed in fiction either?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
That depends. I think torture is worse than murder, and I do think violent rape can be worse than murder.

That being said, the person you are replying to is ridiculous. There is no reason not to have realistic depictions of rape.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yup. Met quite a few of them.
