Would you prefer a politician that votes according to their campaign promises, even if times change, things happen, and the majority of the people they are representing now changed their minds and disagrees with them? You might not agree with what the politician originally promised to do, but it's unavoidable that they will make it happen.

Or would you prefer a politician that votes according to what the majority of the people they are representing wants, even if the people keep changing their mind and it goes against what the politician originally promised to do? The majority of the people might be total idiots, too.

I don't give a shit about the text of their campaign promises. I care about whether or not they are what they represent themselves as. Once they're in office, they should do what seems best according to their own judgment with no regard at all for what the people in their district want. What I care about when I'm voting is, am I getting a sense of what they value and how their judgment functions - can I trust their sense of judgment. That's why lying matters.

"Our representative owes you, not his industry only, but his judgment; and he betrays, instead of serving you, if he sacrifices it to your opinion."

Campaign promises. At least then their behavior is predictable.

Votes on their campaign platform. That's why you put them in office. Because that's what they said they'd support, so they should try to live up to it. It's hard to think there'd be too many new issues that their voting base would start to flip flop on.
