(Anonymous) 2015-12-12 12:08 am (UTC)(link)But I really do not like the idea that a violent female character has adopted "male" qualities and is less of a good female character because of it. That's getting into "women need to be strong in THIS (traditionally feminine) way and men need to be strong in this OTHER (traditionally masculine) way." There is nothing wrong with a female character having some traits that have been considered masculine, when a lot of the time both men and women can have those traits, but women just aren't supposed to have them.

(I don't have much to say about the actual secret except "Hey, I like Arwen! And as someone who still hasn't finished The Silmarillion I don't feel like I know enough about her to comment at length." (I have read up on her, but it's been a long time.)
Maybe the references are loose ones (their beauty, their romance with mortal men), and you aren't supposed to get the idea that the two characters are incredibly similar?

And the characters in Lord of the Rings are all supposed to be lesser than the Silmarillion ones anyway since one of the themes was the decay of the world and that everything was just better in the First Age.
