okay I am anon above who hasn't seen this version (probably should i am a big shakespeare nerd) but I think there is still a responsibility to adapt shakespeare's works with purpose and not just go off of what authorial intent likely was - its why people nowadays the ending of The Merchant of Venice as tragic instead of triumphant. If they were trying to point out how fucked up the text is and maybe didn't do it well, okay, but if you're adapting an unsavory play you should be super aware of these things.

So basically, you want directors to change Shakespeare because it's problematic? What about leaving the stuff in there, but acknowledging that it's problematic? Why not bring it up as something that happens in the play and talk about it rather than straight up changing what we're uncomfortable with?

(As far as seeing the movie, I didn't particularly like it personally. Mostly I took issue with them making Prospero a woman. It changes the entire dynamic of all of Prospero's relationships/interactions, and it just didn't really work that well for me. But YMMV and all that.)
