I unfortunately don't have the book anymore, so I can't point at anything specific, but I do remember that it was fairly obvious that Caliban was meant to be dark-skinned. Considering what was happening during the time this was being written, with colonizing other places and continents? Considering that they didn't really consider Africans- or natives of any kind really, if they were darker than the Europeans- human? I really do think that he was given the fishy attributes on purpose, to exaggerate the fact that he's not really seen as human on top of being darker skinned, whether he's supposed to be African or maybe Native Central/South American.

Not to mention that just because the film DIDN'T take the non-human route, I don't think that's wrong necessarily. You could even argue that having Caliban as a clearly human black man makes the racism/colonialism aspect more obvious and more open to discussion. Discussion is good.

And the fact that the play is about Prospero doesn't actually take away from the Caliban interpretation, by the way. There can actually be more than one theme/story going on in a work at the same time, you know.
