Job hunting and the ridiculous questionnaires you have to fill out.

"When you click on "Start Questionnaire” below, you will be presented with a set of problems like those that you have been practicing. The process will probably be too long for you to finish. However complete as many problems as you can in the time allowed.“

It makes no sense to deliberately give people too many problems to finish in time.

"Hint: Distorting your responses to make yourself appear more favorable than you actually are will not help you because there are no “right” or “wrong” answers.[..] Be aware that the software that administers this assessment is able to determine if you are distorting your responses in order to appear more favorable than you actually are."

There are no right or wrong answers! Except for the ones you're cheating on, which we'll catch you on, you dirty cheating cheater.

Why?

Well, can you think of a valid reason why you would write up 500 problems for applicants to do, when you know that the amount most people can do is 200, and the amount the fastest person can do is 270?

No, but I can see a valid reason to write up 250 or 300 questions. And that's still more than most people will be able to finish.

To weed out people who can't work under a time crunch?

If they give you 100 problems and their 'cut off' for a good worker is 70 well answered questions, then they can immediately ignore anyone who answered less than that many questions.

I suppose. It seems like an unnecessary criteria for a standard retail job. That's not exactly a pressure-cooker environment.

Um... really? Any cashier job (be it store or fast food) it's pretty important for the worker to work fast and efficiently in order to 'process' customers so that there doesn't become a huge bottleneck.

Yeah really. You can only get so rattled over a line of people with shopping carts. It's not exactly life or death. It's sliding veggies across a scanner, not trying to tie off a spurting artery.

And you're always going to get assholes yelling at you, or not speaking your language, or any number of problems that can fluster you. Nevermind any sort of technical problems (equipment failure, etc).

Especially if it's someone's first job, it's quite likely they could panic or get upset. Though that can't really be tested by speed-problems either. That's just blank efficiency without any distractions.

Still, if you can't be efficient even without distractions, it's unlikely they'll want to hire you and trust that you could be efficient WITH distractions.

Yeah, I'm not sure how useful it really is at testing how one performs under stress. Someone could just be completing few problems/going slowly because they're detail-oriented and like to do a thorough job.

Or because they're honest and are actually working the problems. I don't know how many people would think to do it, but a lot of the problems could be found through Google.

efficient even without distractions

And then there's that issue. Some of us are taking the tests in nice quiet bedrooms. Others people will be taking the test with their kids yelling in the background, or in a public library where the distraction level varies.

The whole thing just doesn't seem very useful to me.

Me! This is me! I'd totally use Google to double-check on things though, but that's because my job isn't the kind where you're expected to keep everything in your head. In fact, stressing things through is the worst you can do here.

Yeah, but that's a lot different than sitting and doing 'problems' on a computer. In real life, you always have the wild card of actual humans mucking things up and making the job easier or harder, depending.

When I am queen, I'm banning all online job applications. We're going back to in-person applications, and we're going to make sure every one of them is examined by a flesh-and-blood human being, and that every one of them is somehow responded to, rejection or acceptance.

Because goddamn I fucking hate this Cosmo-quiz bullshit that you have to trip up in order to get ANY kind of attention from a potential employer.

Sounds like one of the ones where they're testing your problem solving skills and creativity. The more responses you give, the better they can judge your response times and your ability to puzzle stuff out. It really doesn't matter if you get all of them, and usually the difficulty increases as you progress.

ALSO it tends to reflect better on you if you take your time and focus on each problem correctly than rushing through and potentially giving quick/shitty answers.

Just give it your best shot.
