Re: Rant Thread

I have been tricked into betaing some shitty shitty sketch of a fic: really pure dreck. I don't know if it's the author that has tricked me themselves or if it's the original beta that saw their chance to leave it to me, but it was under false pretenses any way. I did try to reject it when I saw what I was given, but I got these incredibly pitiful excuses in return.

My true problem here is that I am this very responsible person that always do what I promise. But this? Rejection didn't work. I guess I'll just leave it to rot in the bottom of my trash folder. It shouldn't be my bad conscience, it should be theirs.

SA There's 28 pages of it too. ;_;

Don't do that. Yes, it may be dreck, but it's something they worked really hard on, and now they'll be left wondering.

If you don't think you can give fair criticism, tell them you're unable to beta at this time.

Even when they first said that it was for a fandom I'm virtually alone in, which made me volunteer, and then it turned out to be for another, far remote, fandom entirely?

And when I said I couldn't beta that, they answered that it will become "my" fandom some unnamed time in the future and that they have hurt their hand and can't do it themselves now. Which I think is a blatant lie at this point.

This whole thing is making me so angry. I don't think I can manage another polite refusal either.

AYRT - Ohhh, the person you're betaing for is doing all this. Okay, nevermind, screw them. I thought their fic was so bad the other beta just bolted.

They presented it like they were a beta, but a lot of small facts don't add up, like descriptions of how the story will turn in the future. Another lie is my guess. So yeah, screw them hard.

Hurt your hand too? XD

That's an idea! LOL! And thanks: I haven't been able to laugh over it before, but it sure felt good.

At the very least flatly refuse it. Doesn't have to be ultra polite, and you don't have to make excuses, but saying "I'm not going to do this, find someone else" is a lot more responsible than never getting back to someone.

I've tried that, but they keep insisting. And not making a good case for themselves with it. (See explanation above.)

Say no. Ignore their insisting. You don't owe them anything - not fic betaing, not excuses or explanations, nothing.

Think of this as good practice for you in setting boundaries and saying 'no' to people, because this won't be the first time someone's going to try to get you to do something you don't want to do.

So? They can keep insisting until the heat death of the sun, just keep telling them no and that the discussion is closed and you're not going to respond to any further requests. Then do just that.

When you let someone bully you into doing something, they learn that you are the kind of person who caves in as long as they pester you hard enough. You're teaching them to keep pressuring you. She can't force you to beta the fic, so don't.

Just say you're sorry, but you're unable to do it. Don't offer any reasons or excuses as to why, because then the person will just argue or try to talk you out of it. Keep repeating, "I'm sorry, I can't do it. You'll have to find another beta." for as many times as is necessary.
