They do, actually. :/ There's very very few FiM fics I've read that are generally very good, but even some of those have used that term.

I'm with the OP. That term is so bad. It makes me cringe every time I see it.

I can assure you, my friend, they are not.

Diddle literally means to have sex with. It was one of the most popular cuss words in the 1800's.

What a fucking awful fandom.

They've been quiet and if you ignore the fringe, it's not that bad. This is just terrible word for lesbian ponies. Not because it's offensive, just because it's so cringe worthy.

There are some words in fandom that stick no matter how much you might not want them to, like ship promateaus that are godawful sounding that everyone uses or fanon nicknames that for some bizarre reason catch on, so we've all got our crosses to bear in this regard.

That being said 'applebucking' is fantastic.

I think 'fillyfooler' is adorable. But I'm not a lesbian or a brony, so my opinion doesn't count.

With that said, what are some alternatives that fit the fandom? Is there an equivalent for m/m ponies? No, you can't say 'lesbian' or 'gay'. Real world words are no fun.

The equivalent for dude ponies is "coltcuddler," in case you were still curious.

I'm with you. Now that I understand how the word came about (thanks anon person a couple comments above!) I like it.

I had thought that it had a darker meaning. A female horse is a "filly fooler", fooling other female horses into thinking they weren't interested in them and then SURPRISE INTEREST. Or something like that.

Fooling around with fillies is kind of cute.

I hate that term. That's one thing that'll completely throw me out of a fic, honestly.

Because, see. That term would make more sense as a thing to call a pedophile, rather than a lesbian. A filly is a young female horse (typically under 4 years old). Grown female horses are called mares. So, a grown pony who's 'fooling' with a filly is a pedophile. Some fics treat it as a slur, which is a bit better. But still. If I could never see that again, I'd be happy.

I don't know if whoever coined that term is just clueless, or if they're buying into the whole gay = pedophile BS. Either way, it rubs me wrong.

The adult ponies are called "fillies" and "colts" in-show, so I can kinda understand why they went with that and "coltcuddler", but... like you, I can't get away from feeling like they'd be more fitting for pedophiles than homosexuals.
