NA If I get this right (heh): you can commiserate together with someone or towards someone. Like:

With: "You've bled through your pants! Fuck, that sucks! If you tie your blazer around your waist no-one's going to notice. Let's find a rest room."

Towards: "You've bled through your pants! Here, tie my jacket around your waist and no-one's going to notice. It's hardly visible anyway."

A sympathetic person can of course be either gender, but you might need less explaining with a person in-the-know.
