Does fandom just skew younger nowadays or is it just me? I remember when I was a teenager starting out on LJ and trying to get with the cool crowd, everyone I wanted to befriend was an adult, at least college-aged. Some were married with kids. Nowadays, the bnfs on Tumblr are the kids.

Depending on when you started fandom, a disproportionate amount of internet users were probably college kids, versus today when many more people have access to the internet in their homes.

When I started in the 90s as a teenager, while everyone in my school/peer group used the internet all the time, we didn't socialize with *each other*. I didn't know what my classmates were getting up to online becuase there was no Facebook or anything like that. I ran into other kids occasionally but I was too old to have been carefully shepherdd through safe kiddie zones. So the internet was Grownup Space and you had to act like a grownup and not draw attention to the fact that you weren't one.

Probably because back in the day, kids had limited access to the internet. A lot of the time it was slow dial-up. Also, it was harder to find and access fandoms because they were spread.

Nowadays, most people have internet access in their pocket and fandom is largely centralized.

I think part of it is that not being an adult was frowned upon, so a fair amount of people lied about their age. Additionally, the internet has become more and more accessible and <18 year olds have the most free time.

I also feel like fandom's tastes have shifted to towards things that can appeal to a younger audience more too. Like MCU, Steven Universe, and the like.

Well back in the days of dial up, I didn't even have internet until I was 13. And then it took me some time to discover fandom, lol it started with the Nancy Drew video games.
