One thing I liked about their relationship was how clearly Raleigh loves Mako. Those long looks that were bursting with affection and admiration. It reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AhU12zC8fc Relevent bit starts at 1:10.

He loves her, but he also clearly respects her. He doesn't talk down to her or dismiss her, and that's the real key detail. His adoration of Mako was because of how capable an individual she is, not out of any urge to protect or coddle her. Mako Mori can take care of herself, and Raleigh Becket appreciates that, probably more than anything else.
