Well, I don't think it was as overtly romantic as most films of this type are, but it can still be easily interpreted as romance so I wouldn't have called it a great example of a platonic friendship or anything.

I bet if they were the same gender you wouldn't have thought there was anything romantic about them and called the shippers delusional.

Iiiii don't know, there are a few scenes that one would be hard-pressed to argue aren't shippy, regardless of the genders involved.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Er, nah. Because there's that scene where Mako is looking at Raleigh with his shirt off...

you could read the scene that way, but she could also be looking at his scars from piloting a jaeger solo, just like stacker has.

I don't know, people are capable of being friends with someone they think is hot.

Hmm, I did read the relationship as romantic - but, what I liked about it was that Mako was not just a love interest, but they were presented as equals. And sadly even that is rare in a lot of mainstream fiction.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
No Big Damn Kiss though. But yeah, they're a bit more obviously romantic than, say, Furiosa and Mad Max.

I thought Furiosa and Max had similar undertones at the end, but maybe that's just me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
The Pacific Rim duo had vague romantic undertones running throughout the film, though, which is why I'd say their relationship is more suspect. I see neither as fullblown romance though.

I think Furiosa/Max is like exactly as ambiguous as Mako/Raleigh, actually.

It's very strange to me that that was how it was described to you. There are a few scenes that make it very clear that there's attraction between them, and I think if the film was going for the purely non-romantic route, those scenes wouldn't have been included.

I personally really liked that they never kissed, though. It left open the possibility that, despite their romantic chemistry, they chose not to go beyond friendship.

I wonder if maybe they got mixed up with Gale?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
SA - And judging from the comments, I ironically got it confused with a different fandom. Whoops.

IME, Pacific Rim fans are very keen on selling their fandom to others and they can slightly exaggerate what they believe are its positive qualities.

One thing I liked about their relationship was how clearly Raleigh loves Mako. Those long looks that were bursting with affection and admiration. It reminded me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5AhU12zC8fc Relevent bit starts at 1:10.

He loves her, but he also clearly respects her. He doesn't talk down to her or dismiss her, and that's the real key detail. His adoration of Mako was because of how capable an individual she is, not out of any urge to protect or coddle her. Mako Mori can take care of herself, and Raleigh Becket appreciates that, probably more than anything else.

Personally I could read it as romantic or platonic(though I'd say it's not quite 100% platonic), and I think since I was expecting the same old typical love-story that we get in every action movie I was surprised by the fact that there was no grand declaration of 'true love' or Big Kiss at the end.

That doesn't make it some perfect shining example of male/female friendship but I liked the slight deviation from the norm regardless.

On one hand I could totally imagine two people who are pushed to be so psychologically intimate developing a friendship that feels like something else but isn't in such a short time...but I'm also pretty sure the hint of romance was what they were going for. I couldn't possibly give a fuck either way though since finding respectful and interesting het relationships is about as common as fully platonic m/f. Which is partly why I hate the part of fandom that clings to these ambiguous examples and acts like the absence of evidence is the evidence of absence when both friendship and romance are expressed in about a thousand different ways aside from movie clichés and gosh, those tend to overlap a lot!

Not that I found Mako and Raleigh all that interesting, but I can see why people ship them.

Me too, OP.

I didn't read it as romantic until that scene :(

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
tbh if you are looking for it, you will find romantic hints everywhere. That is why shipping is such a huge thing in general.

Lots of people could find "romantic" undertones in male/male or female/female friendship even though they are non canonly gay.

In my opinion, a strong friendship is the ideal start for a good romance anyways. True it's only het relationships that turn romantic in mainstream movies, but I think elements of a platonic relationship and elements of a romantic relationship can overlap a lot. The only difference is the platonic relationships typically doesn't have kissing or sex involved.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 09:20 am (UTC)(link)
I still think the best example of a male/female friendship in mainstream is Harry and Hermione. Ever since I read that part of the last book with Hermione and Harry at Godrics Hollow, it really stuck in my mind as a great friendship that lasted years and was never romantic at any point.

I know there were shippers who probably expected something purely because they were main guy/main girl, but it never happened.

Another good example I can't forget is from Firefly, Mal and Zoe. War buddies. I really loved that episode where Wash was feeling insecure how well they work together, but they just teased him about it.

The lack of a Big Damn Kiss at the end was new, although apparently it happened in the novel.
