Personally I could read it as romantic or platonic(though I'd say it's not quite 100% platonic), and I think since I was expecting the same old typical love-story that we get in every action movie I was surprised by the fact that there was no grand declaration of 'true love' or Big Kiss at the end.

That doesn't make it some perfect shining example of male/female friendship but I liked the slight deviation from the norm regardless.
