Brown rice

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Thhougt I'd try the healthier option at a restaurant. It tasted like oatmeal*. Is it supposed to taste like oatmeal?

*Maybe bulgur? It's been a long time since I've had either but it definitely brought memories of childhood breakfast. Which isn't what I was necessarily looking for in my chinese takeout.

Hmm. No? At least I've never had any brown rice that tasted like oatmeal. It sounds like the stuff you had didn't have enough/the right seasoning/spices.

Brown rice is not something that tastes good, I've found, but you just feel better about yourself for "making a healthy choice". If you're in it for taste, you'll be disappointed.

Really? I like brown rice. Also white rice. Also fried rice. or really just rice in general.

Not supposed to taste like oatmeal. Sounds way overcooked to me.

Don't think so, no. I'm wondering how someone could've fucked up rice that badly.

I for one like brown rice, but it isn't my favorite. I don't go to restaurants much anymore but when I do I typically get brown rice as well.

Right now I am eating miniature chocolate chip cookies dipped in Cool Whip. Which is an awful excuse for dinner but I'm too lazy to get up and cook some real food.

We had latkes last night for the end of Chanukah, and it was awesome.

I am salivating from afar.

The highlight of my week last week was when my parents picked me up from the airport (so I didn't have to leave my car there while I was on vacation for two weeks) and they had brought me leftover latkes and sour cream in a little cooler. XD

Latkes!!!!

Home made or from a box?

God, I love latkes! I think we had this conversation last year? I remember a post about latkes...

Favorite recipe?

I think I've only ever had latkes from a box once in my life and they were not cooked by mother. Boxed latkes are, at best, latkes of desperation. Of course my family's latkes use coarser potato shreds than most others, so thick dense finely-grated potato versions are always a little odd to me. I guess it all depends on what you grew up on, right? Because ours look almost like spiders!

My gf made me scallops with pasta today, I had never had scallops before! There were really good.

I loooooove scallops! See if she will make scallop tempura for you, that's the bomb too, especially with a little hot sauce!

best way to cook basmati rice?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Any videos/recipes/anything on the best way to cook it and WHAT to cook it with?

Thanks!

The best kind of rice! I'd also like to know.

I rinse it and cook in a pressure cooker, water two to one, with some salt and a half spoon of oil. Sometimes I add a bit of a carrot and a bell paper. Yeah, it's as boring as it sounds.

It's the best type of rice for some uses, yes. It's a poor choice to pair with Chinese food, where the best choice is jasmine rice, or for making sushi where you'd need a short grain rice specifically meant for sushi, for example.

Basmati rice has a slightly drier texture than say, jasmine rice or short grain rice. It goes best with dishes that have a lot of sauce to soak up, like curry.

It's been my favorite as a side dish. ) I'd use a different kind for, say, risotto. Can't say it's dry... Maybe because I use a lot of water.

Hm-mm, did you use the recipe in the article? I like pressure cooked rice because it's fast. The downside is washing the lid separately from other dishes however it's still faster than simply boiling it.
