Because nothing says appealing and bad-ass like frumpy robes and sandals. I don't know what's going on in that game, but I'm hardpressed to think of any situation I'd want to wear that in.

There's a difference between wearing things out of necessity and wanting to wear them.

Caves are made to snub your sandal clad toes, so I think not.

Wouldn't pants and boots (or at least some sort of footwear that isn't open at the toes, etc.?) be preferable? Sandals aren't cold weather gear and heavy skirts would get tangled if you were trying to climb over rocks or through heavy brush.

It looks inspired by traditional outfits of people in mountainous regions. From cursory Google searches, Peruvian seems closest in terms of overall design, sandals and all; and maybe Mongolian wear, too. Personally, I dig 'em.
